She gives me a look that is a cross between, I’m-confused-as-to-why-you’re-here and I-must-be-a-good-host-even-to-unwanted-guests. She yells to her mom that it’s just me, and she will be right back. Then she steps onto the porch and shuts the door behind her.“Hey, Zach, what’s up?”
I say the first thing that pops into my head. “Merry Christmas.”
This makes her laugh. “Merry Christmas,” she smiles.
