Description The Idea
~RiseOfTheStorm is currently holding a design contest. I realized I need to do more contests and the concept sounded fun. I decided to give it a shot. His contest is to create his characer, Ridgewhisker, based on this description:

Ridge is a lithe, slender she-cat with narrow, sloping shoulders and a softly arching spine as well as a very thin yet long-extended tail and delicate paws. She is currently in her prime, with a high tolerance for pain and worse, kits. However, do not let her sweet looks fool you, Ridge may be cunning and merciless when confronted in battle, hence the nicks in her ears. She honors the warrior code, but in spite of that, she will not hesitate to break the code for the welfare of her clan. In battle, she is formidable, as a warrior Ridge bears a silent determination. Ridge is also fiercely loyal to her clanmates, to the point that she will lay down her life gladly.

He also gave hints to what she should look like. He said he preferred the body structure of an Abyssinian and the general appearance of a tabby. Of course I know how to do a tabby, but I had no clue how to pull off an Abyssinian.

I researched the breed a bit and found quite a few interesting things that I wanted to put in.

1. Abyssinian's are very energetic and intelligent. Riseofthestorm covered this perfectly in the description, and I tried to show that through her pose and expression.

2. The breed is believed to be from Ancient Egypt or the Indian Ocean coast. I tried to add an Egyptian vibe with the markings on her face, especially her forehead.

3. Abyssinian's usually have a warm reddish-brown base. Their eye colors consist of hazel, gold, green, or copper. They have large pointed ears and a medium length coat. They also are thin and have long legs. I believe I added all of these concepts. The ears were especially hard since it seem disproportionate, but I left it alone to keep the ears large.

This was quite a challenge for me. I am not used to nicks in the ears or long legs, but I think I pulled it off. Now that I look at her again, she kinda reminds me of my OC Cedarkit. A lot of the entries to the contest look similar to each other as well. However, Ridgewhisker shows her own beauty and also her own power in an unique way.

Anything Else?
If you are up to the challenge like I was, please join the contest! The information is right here [link] but hurry! It ends on the 31st!

Can I ask, what program do you use?

Thanks, I use photoshop 7. It's a little outdated, but it works fine

Oh okay ^^
I can't seem to find a [free] program that makes things transparent and actually look good. I use GIMP, but if you use the paint tool to do the outline, the transparency looks weird. It works fine on the pencil tool, but the pencil tool doesn't look smooth enough.

Sorry for the lecture xDDD

hmm. I haven't used gimp but I do know a bit about it. It's actually quite simple to make it transparent.

When you use it, is there a background layer that is a default when you do a new project?

Well, generally what I do, is I have a layer [top layer] for the outline, bottom layer is the base fur colour, then above the bottom layer is the fur details, if it's a tabby/tortoishell, then above that layer is the shading. I learnt a method where, you use the fill tool on the shading layer and the base fur and fill the entire layer. I change the opacity on the shading layer, then finish the cat and everything. Then, at the end, on the outline layer, I fill the outside of it red, use the colour select tool to select that red, then erase parts from each layer bit by bit.

It sounds a bit... confusing. I'll get a screenshot, give me a second x3

okay so the background layer, click that then hit the trash pail on the bottom of the layer box. Thats how it becomes transparent

Yeah I usually do that at the end
its just there's still little orange bits around the edge that I have to spend time erasing e.e
