Description chalk pastel on kreft paper. Some folks were wondering what I was working on. I plan on laying this underneath a nother picture and tearing layers off to reveal the skeleton. Not sure how I'm gonna doit, but itll happen somehow. I doubt I'll go down to the muscle tissue through

So I've tried oil pastels a few times.. slightly getting the hang of blending and such.. but would you say you prefer chalk ones instead? If so I might try to find a cheap set like you were saying to somebody else. There has to be a huge difference between using chalk and oil pastels right?

Huge difference in the oil versus chalk. Go with cheap ones. There is something to be said for the 2.00 a stick Rembrandtsa that melt like butter, but unless you can afford a huge expendature, I think the cheapies work just as well. I really like the oils, they can give a better contrast because your darks can be brilliantly dark and give better contrast. The chalk pastels are just that, chalk. There aren't many dark variantions that hold up in chalk, so u'd end up using a lot of charcoal with your colors to get some effects right. See my skeleton painting in chalk pastel. Lots of neon/ vibrant colors, but mostly counterbalanced with black or purples. In oil, there are more choices for darker tones. All personal preference. And oils won't dust your socks.

ah, thanks for the input.

I think I should learn how to use oil pastels before I even move on to something. I take on everything at once and it never lets me learn how to do anything properly.

This is really awesome by itself but what you're talking about sounds really cool too.
I hate using chalk pastels! Mostly because I just suck at using them, I have a hard time blending and not smearing because they are so messy. Have any tips? lol. Clearly you know what you're doing.

Use cheap ones. They tend to be a little thicker. It helps to have the chalk at least resist the smearing. I also staple or tape the pieces to the wall while I work so there is no accidental smudging. They also have some cool smudging tools (just wound paper that you basically sand off the pastel when too much builds up). But mostly I just smudge with my fingers. no special tricks. Just go high contrast, don't over smudge, but if you do, lay down another ebad of your highlight color for some pop.

Thank you for the advice!
Yeah my teacher calls them blending stumps but I prefer to use my fingers as well.
That's one of my problems, I need more contrast. I see what you mean though, I'm going to try it with the piece I'm working on now.
Do you use fixative between layers?

nah, I really dont use anything to preserve my artwork. Most paintings regardless of media will usually last our lifetime. Beyond that, screw throse future robot people. Seriously though, I don't use anything between layers, just keep slapping more chalk on it. I founda great set at Michaels Craft store for like 4 dollars that had 40 different colors. So I bought all they had. They've been working out nice.

Make sure you keep me updated with apicture when done.

I was just wondering because my instructor said that it's good to spray between layers so as not to lose any colors, but I guess it just depends on how you work too.
Wow, four dollars? That's pretty damn cheap.

Oh I will! I have several works that I haven't brought home and I plan on posting them. I also have my stuff from my Drawing I class but they're not really worth looking at, hehe.
