Fractals are created mathematically by using algorithms to calculate "fractal" objects and the results you can see as fractal images. And "raw" fractals are the pictures which came out of the different programs ( Apophysis, Ultra Fractal, JWildfire...), without any manipulation.

So I hope the explanation will helps you to understand that kind of pictures
