365 DAY CHALLENGE

<< Previous Day  |Start  ||Next Day  >>

Okay, I think its time. It is high time for me to go back to what I love doing most of all. Character design and character sheets. I haven't done any of those in a while. So this is a base I will use, sort of like a real life mannequin, to design outfits for a particular character. It swill also help me define what each character's body proportion each in relationship to each other...don't all of this will become clear very soon.

Looks good! I tried drawing something like this a few times but I could never get it right. For some reason, something always seemed a bit off. >_>
Do you always draw the pose like this first before adding in the details?

Recently I have gotten into the habit of drawing out things like this and then adding more detail on top, I think it has really helped me. But you know, everyone makes the art work for them differently. So try it out, maybe it helps. Also, if it looks off, read up on body proportions, i.e. where the legs meet the torso is halfway between the feet and the top of the head, the elbow joints are roughly on the same line as the belly button, knees are halfway between the bottom of the torso and the floor. etc etc…once you get enough practice and get those proportion relationships in your brain, then the mannequin stage as some people call it becomes pretty much second nature.

Thanks! I think I'll try it again.

I honestly struggle in making a very good base using my imagination. Did you do this all from your imagination too without any reference like pictures? If so, you rock!

Me, I always use references, like different pictures / positions of the human body I want to draw.

A simple pose like this one I just draw it from memory, using the same proportion relationship I have been learning. But more complicated poses I do most of the time look up a picture, usually a photo, of a pose similar to what I have in mind and work form there. But I am trying to do more poses straight from memory, I think that skill comes from having a good understanding of human anatomy, and not just knowing how to draw it, but understanding how it is built from the ground up. So that's a goal for us to work towards, yeah?

Very interesting even if it's only the base.

Yeah its a little simple, but it will help me out a lot for the next couple of drawings I want to do.

Damn. You are awesome at people. I've wanted to learn how for a loooong time ( I can't even do stick figures)

Any tips?

Read. A lot.

Read tutorials. Read books on anatomy. Read books on figure drawing. Watch video tutorials. Learn about body proportions. There are a number of things you can do, it really depends on what aspect of drawing people you want to work on. So if you say you can't do stick figures, then start there. (figure drawing) When I start a drawing I do a stick figure skeleton frame then over that I add shapes to make it into a primitive mannequin shape then over that I start defining muscles masses and so forth.

Sorry I know this is kinda vague, but "drawing people" is a huge subject, so if you wanna be more specific on what you are having trouble with I can probably give you more concise tips.
