Description
No animals were hurt during the creation of this piece. I don't condone cruelty or harming of humans or animals, and this piece is by no means about that.Human beings have the tendency to be quite extreme at times, sometimes even destroying what is beautiful.
Thanks for the comments from everyone. I understand the concerns. Sometimes art has to draw some figurative blood in order to create an impression and to be a catalyst for thought.

Seriously people need to calm the fuck down and to not get their panties in a big bunch over this beautiful photo.
People. NO KITTENS WERE HARMED. The very talented photographer said so both in the description and in a comment. It's not that hard to read the goddamn description as it takes less than a minute unless you need a long time to digest it. But eh, now that that's out of the way. This is a very well done photograph and you clearly have a mastery of darkroom skills. I applaud you for sending an important message by stirring up controversial thoughts and feelings. I could not help but laugh afterwards as it was indeed, ridiculously ironic in a illogical sense of judgment. I didn't feel bad for the kittens here, but for the kittens in reality whom this actually happens to everyday. Look, if you know you don't have enough or do the, " I think I can have a cat if I work hard enough " , then please don't get a cat. It will save you the frustration, the possible heartache, and perhaps the poor cat's life. Having a pet is expensive even for budget people. So I hope this sends the message that if you can't live up to the expectations of having a cat, then don't make the cat suffer for your own poor choices. And before the smartass people comment, I have two cats of my own, a tuxedo cat and an orange tabby cat and a black corn snake. Good job Charles and I hope to see more of your work soon.

I don't know why people are getting so bent out of shape about it. It's clearly stated that no animals were harmed in the making....so chill...trick photography was around way before photoshop...
I love animals, all animals. I can't stand to see anything bad happen to them. Nothing bad really happened to the animals in this photo, but in real life terrible things happen every day and people just turn a blind eye.
I LOVE this image because to me it depicts how hollow, soulless and thoughtless society can be towards not only the smaller beings but also the smaller aspects of life. As the woman in the picture tosses away a box of free kittens, (as many hardened people really have done when they can't find them homes...in fact that's how my cat came to live with me. she was abandoned, I took her in while most people just walked by her and said 'aw, kitty! cute!' and carried on with their lives) humanity has tossed away nearly every natural gift the planet has given us...including, as many people who comment here have proven, the gift of common sense and rational thought.
Dear artist, please continue making wonderful thought provoking works of art. Those that sleepwalk through life may never really hear what you've got to say, but the rest of us are listening...and every once and awhile, a bold enough voice will awake a sleepwalker or two, so hold you head high, and your camera even higher, the world needs your voice.

This piece reminds me of all the stray cats that have been thrown away because of many reasons be it that the kitten has now turned into a cat and has lost all its cuteness or the fact that the kittens were not planed. It's sad of how many strays are out there now days.
I don't know if that's how the piece was ment to be taken but that's how I see it. You've done a great job on this ^_^

This is sublime. It annoys me how good it is.
If you'll forgive me, something about it reminds me of a Sebastiao Salgado photograph of an oil well firing in Iraq during the Gulf War. You may know it, it shows a man walking toward the towering blaze of a well, while foam fire retardant arcs and showers over his head. It's apocalyptic. But he appears as a statue-figure, like the woman depicted in your image. A central figure that makes the action but somehow appears removed from the living world.

i agree it's a beautiful piece, but at the same time, it's difficult for me to accept this one because a very close family friend rescued Rio after he was thrown off a bridge with his brothers and sisters (as they were all kittens). They were tied and sealed shut into a plastic garbage bag, and she tried to find the other kittens, but the only one she was able to find was Rio.
I still wonder about the other kittens that drowned that day...and my heart breaks for them, because I watched Rio grow up into an adult cat as he lived at our house for awhile.
So seeing a photograph of somebody throwing kittens off a roof of a house into the water makes me sad and depressed at the same time. My heart wants to cry, "I'LL TAKE THEM! GIVE THEM TO ME! DON'T KILL THEM"
At the same time, as a photographer, I know where we can manipulate our work to fit our vision, and sometimes what we see or create is not always pretty or perfect. Nothing in life is pretty or perfect, so I have to give you kudos to you for the darkroom work, because I know how difficult it is to do that.

Allison,
thank you for your kind and well articulated thoughts on the piece. My cat is also a stray that I took in after she was abandoned at an old metal scrap yard. She is my little striped shadow. The feedback that I have gotten on this piece is quite remarkably unexpected, and I am sure that there are people out there that view me as a genuinely evil person, but I think you hit it on the head when you said that things in life aren't always pretty, sometimes we make situations worse with what we may see as the simple solution. Thanks again.
