Description When you come across something rare,
or something that is once-in-a-lifetime,
grab hold of it,
hold onto it,
and never let it go.

It won't come again,
and if you say no
or give it away when you have it,
it won't come back to you
and you won't get it back.

So keep everything you love close.
Keep those you care about always at hand.
If they matter to you,
don't toss them aside or
let them slip between your fingers.

The hard learned lessons when you never get proper human programming. To many times. To many times.

Oh...
let me guess, is this related to your breakup? (judging by what you also wrote on your alt) If so, I'm really sorry to hear that.

But sometimes, things can come back to you if you look for them. Especially if they were meant to be in your life in the first place.

I have let quite a few friendships slip away due to not actively keeping hold on them. I can't tell if I would be a happier person with friends, I think not, because I was born to be melancholic. But what do I know?
Being clingy is not always the solution though. Sure, "don't toss them aside"! But some ways part, and by holding on for too long no one is getting anywhere.
I'm sorry!

What if they're hurting me?

You have to figure out which hurts more, and if they are worth the pain.

In the end, that's very subjective.

Of course. That is why they have to consider it for themselves, instead of making it a general rule or a quick advice.

I relate to this on some deep levels. Not to risk sounding like a self-help book, but don't hold on too hard. It can feel like your hand has been a fist clenched around one thing and holding it close for so long and then you can't open it when you need to make something other than a fist.

I'm sorry if that means nothing to you or sounds like it came way out of nowhere. It is a nice poem regardless.
