Description
And here it is in it's final form (or at least final for now. I may do touch ups later on... there are some things that bug me still). I spent maybe 7-8 hours total.... YES! I'M SUPER SLOW!!!!!!! I still need to work on my painting skills, especially when it comes to using the tablet. I feel as if I'm finally beginning to get the hang of my Wacom, but I still have a LOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGG way to go.I used a reference from a picture by a photographer by the name of Denver Bryan. I did, however, take artistic liscense and changed a few things (for example, I exaggerated and intensified the colors a bit).

7-8 hours?!? HOw Horrible!
Na na You need to stop You make us all feel bad. It takes me at least two weeks to make a simple picture *holds head*
I'm glad to see you doing some more coloured paintings again. I didn't think you could do it but you've improved so much from those paintings you said you did a year ago. It's strange that it's ditigal...but it just looks so natural! And to me that's probably one of the hardest things for a digitally draw picture to do O.O

Wonderful job. 7-8 hours, you're not slow, I'M slow, it took me 28 hours to finish a digital drawing and it is nothing like yours. The painting is excelent, the fur looks great and so does the log. The eyes are perfect in the sense that when you look at them the whole picture comes to life. Like they say, the eyes are the windows to the soul, and you captured that. Kudos.

Thankies Yes, it's all about the eyes. If the eyes don't work, I usually scrap the pic.

Yeah, that's true. I once made a drawing of a wolf and the eye was not that great. Then I redid the eye in the computer and it really made a difference.

Like I've said before. It's lovely. You're using Painter, correct? What tool? I cant find a tool on Painter that I like.

Actually I used PS7. I would use painter, but I don't own the program; and what with money being rather scarce these days, well, y'know. I made my own brush tips for the log, and I used the # 14 for the majority of the fur (I also created a few brush tips for his coat as well). No filters. The original is much larger, dimensions and file size. I shrank the picture down so that the entire image was viewable on screen. My tool of choice? My Wacom Intuos2 tablet

Photoshop huh? That's my program of choice too (I prefer 6 though. I dont like how they combined the airbrush and paintbrush together). For some reason I thought you were using Painter....must have been someone else. So...are you using the paint brush then? Oppose to the air brush?
Hmm...I'm going to have to break down and learn how to make my own brushes...*dramatic sigh* I was dreading that day (additionally I dont know how to make brushes...but I'll learn I suppose).
I use a Wacom Intuos2 as well! But when I finish up some of my wip's I'll be moving over to my intuos3 that I got for x-mas (although I dont know if I'll like it...because my current tablet and I have a very nice relationship ).

Oh, yes I've seen that book. Something close to $50. But I know the book is worth it. I just didnt want to spend the money if it wasnt going to work with PS6 you know? There is also a really good book by the same people for Illustrator. That one I have, but I dont use Illustrator much because I -hate- it. What you can do with one brush stroke in PS, takes 13 different steps in Illustrator.
Yes, an Intuos3...actually the levels of pressure it can sense is a little intimidating. =X
It's a 6x8. Which is a size upgrade for me too. I like my 4x5. It's cute...and a pretty sort of purple color...

Oh, one more thing. There's an excellent book out there called Character Design & Painting: The Photoshop CS Edition. I goes into indepth detail on brush creating, blending, etc. Eventhough it's the CS edition, PS7 is pretty much the same program so it's still extremely useful. I'll warn you, it's an expensive book, but it's worth every penny you'll fork out. Good books are invalueble.
Oh, just out of curiosity, what size tablet did you get?

Hmmm.... I used to be frustrated with that aspect of PS7 as well until I learned that you can turn the airbrush feature off! Pretty simple, really. Just go to the brushes palette and uncheck the airbrush box

I know...what bothers me is that I use the brush and the airbrush together...and I liked be able to hit 'b' and 'j' for my two different tools...now you've got to drag your mouse over to it and check the box. It messed up my whole rountine.
And I'm lazy.

I'm with you on that one! It's very annoying to have to drag & click and drag & click all the freaking time! I've just finally come to accept it as being part of the routine. After you've used your Wacom for hours on end it almost becomes second nature and you begin to forget that you're even doing it (either that or you're going insane from staring at the screen forever and a day, forgetting to sleep and eat, whilest you become absorbed in your own little reality set apart from the time and space of the real world)
The main thing that bugged me was having to pick out colors all the time.... that was before I realized how stupid I was not to notice the 'swatches' palette and 'save palette' option..... yeah, a brilliant one I am.......

michiruokami In reply to ChayaA [2005-01-10 18:13:24 +0000 UTC]
*laughs* Well...yeah you can save swatches to your palette. But having an entire color swatch sitting in the corner makes my canvas space smaller. So I just save my colors on a seperate layer. That way, if I ever want to come back to the picture a year from then, I dont have to ever find the colors again.
Yes...the clicking and the box checking...annoys me. I'm the kind of digital artist who has my right hand busy on the tablet while my left hand is hitting all the hot keys.
That has a funny story to it too...
I loaded PS7 and didnt look at the tool bar. I just started drawing, so I used the paint brush to lay down my colors and then I went to hit 'j' for airbrush and it's now the healing tool (for blemishes) and it wasnt doing anything so I thought I went crazy for a while. And then, my eyes started to imagine that I was actually using the airbrush (I use a 11% pressure when I airbrush...very light).
It was a humorous experience, but I dumped PS7 like a bad habit.

Oh, I forgot to mention that once you customize/create a brush you can save it in your brushes palette. That way, all you'll have to do to load it is click the button on your pen to select a brush tip. This will save you all the time and trouble it takes to select from the brushes palette.

Oh, hey, that's good to know. Especially since I'm prone to changing my brushes tons of times. I cant imagine having to remake the brush stroke everytime I wanted to use it.

I actually changed alot since my last upload. I finnished the ears and paw, painted in some fur in the BG, added a few more details to the coat, and blended everything together so the picture would look natural.
