Description This is one of my Corporeal Canine masks painted with a coyote finish. I have done almost every canine type except this one so I thought I'd post it... the coyotes up here tend to be more gray from what I've been told but the reference coloring/pic that my customer requested has some nice auburn tones in it. If my customer sends me a pic of himself modeling it I'll attach that, too.

Thanks for looking!

Material: latex
Paint: my own special latex-bonding blend.

Oops... I posted incorrectly below. I thought you commented on a different mask... not sure why I thought that. My bad.

I *do* have UK customers with this mask but I don't have any UK businesses I sell to so I am not sure who had one like it. Hmmm...

This mask *is* latex. I'd like to make it out of the semi-rigid material but, with the mold I have, I can't. Maybe in the future, though. This is one of my most popular sellers.

Thanks again, sorry for the confusion!

Interesting. Well, they weren't mine, (unfortunately... sounds like a great event)! I started making these for the NH Renaissance Faire in October and I didn't export any to the UK. Maybe in the future, though. I have a fair amount of UK customers but they aren't businesses. This style of mask is also not regular latex, these are semi-rigid synthetic rubber... very fun stuff! Thanks for the note!

Yes, I have done a few foxes. The red & blk wolves are the most popular then foxes are next. People like the coyotes also but usually wolves or foxes are what people seek.

great job is it easier to work with latex than paper mache?

che4u In reply to goldenpuppy [2007-03-07 03:05:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Latex has pros and cons to it. I haven't worked a ton with paper mache. The main thing that's tricky with the latex and synthetic rubber is that one has to think backwards. Instead of it being an additive process it's almost a removal process since one's casting into a mold. Tricky to explain but I think you get the gist. Thanks again!

That's beautiful. How do you make something like that. I think the colors on it are very nice. The coyotes that we had in Colorado were that color.

Thank you!

Well, the latex and neoprene masks are quite a process but the end result is worth it.

For the original mask I have to: build the mask, then mold it.

Once the mold is done I have to:

1> clean the original mask out of the mold.

2> I then do one or two casts to make sure the mold is clean.

3> After that I can cast the masks out of that mold.

4> Then I pull them out of the mold,

5> trim them/clean them and

6> then I handpaint each one with a homemade paint recipe that actually bonds to the latex, not just sits on it like some paints do. I build up layer after layer instead of doing just one. That gives the piece more depth and looks more hairlike.

7> After that I put the strap on and, voila! Complete.

Hope this helps, it's kind of a confusing process in that you have to think backward a lot of the time, as with any molding use, but you get the hang of it afetr a while... "or you have a psychotic episode". LOL So, for casts out of an original mold, (like most non-commissioned pieces are), the steps are 3 through 7. For original molds they're all of the steps above.

Thanks again!

Wow! That is a lot to remember! How long have you been doing this?

che4u In reply to Thylacine-Hunter [2006-06-09 15:28:08 +0000 UTC]

I did ceramics in high school and college, (unoffical minor). I started doing the masks and horns in latex in 2001 if memory serves. I started using neoprene just recently, as a rigi, non-latex alternative.

It's a lot of fun, (usually, LOL), and it makes it possible for me to stay at home with my little ones, too.

Thanks for the notes!

LOL yep, they do tend to have more brown tones in the midwest. And they call coyotes "coy-dogs" here in central NH. Dunno why?

I really like the colouring on this, although to be honest with you I have no idea what a coyote looks like. However this looks great and I really hope the customer loved it too!

Well done

Thanks! No coyotes in the UK? I was thinking of posting a link to the reference shot but I don't know who took it so I don't think I can. If my customer sends me a pic I'll ask them if they know who took the pic so I can get permission. It was kind of a wonky looking coyote, feature-wise, (eyes were very close together), but the coloring was neat.

Thanks again!

None in the UK that I know of but then i've not travelled around so much so their might be some somewhere but I don't think there are any in the wild. So i'll look forwards to seeing the picture from the customer
