Description In case anyone's curious, here's what my bedroom/workspace currently looks like. Just finished a couple renovations/upgrades so it's feeling pretty fresh. =]

Details

For notes and details on my setup, check out this link: [link]

Some pics have notes on them: [link]

Space was limited in my room, so I decided long ago to remove my bed and build a lofted setup.

I do a lot of tinkering so I built in a U shaped desk that extends more or less around the full perimeter of my room with lots of space to work on things. My desktop setup lies directly underneath my bed and on the opposite side I have a soldering/electronics station.

I recently underwent a few hardware upgrades for my desktop which include a liquid cooled 6 core, 64 gb RAM custom machine and 3x 27” Achieva Shimian Korean IPS displays. These are mounted to the wall with monitor arms and can be pulled closer to the edge of the table if needed. The setup works really well for my 3d modeling and coding work.

They are also backlit by a RGB LED strip powered by an Arduino R3 and Python based client on the desktop which changes color according to the color on the screens. I find that it helps a lot with eye strain and adds a great ambiance to the room.

Hope you enjoy. Let me know if you have any questions as well. =]

Good God man don't let employers find this out or us cube trolls will never have our freedom again!

Seriously though that is a fantastic layout idea particularly for a tiny home/apartment rig. The SO may not care for it but if it helps pay the bills then what the heck?

Oh my goodness I just read the description fully
64GB?! WHAT. WHAT. 8 x 8GB sticks?! 4 x 16GB sticks?! Seriously I didn't even know that was possible.

And the RGB LED Strip rigged to change color according to the screens is an AMAZING idea that I really really find myself envious of~!
You'll have to talk to me more about that kind of lighting setup when I get more money ;D
Thanks for sharing!

I'm probably missing an obvious detail somewhere, but what's supporting the bed's weight on the pillow side?

In any case, I love the efficiency. It certainly feels accomplishing to get more out of a limited area. Hooray for making the best use of space! If I'm ever by the area, you should show me how to build this or that or whatever sometime. That glass came out nice, and I'm sure that'd be fun.

(Oh, and... nice chair you got there. ;D )

chemb0t In reply to Cytochrom [2012-10-12 18:28:14 +0000 UTC]

Ah well it's not obvious but the bed is anchored to the wall itself using bolts on the inside of the frame. I guess you can say that the other three legs of the bed are the studs in the wall.

And yeah, that chair is awesome. Got it from a good friend of mine.

I like the setup of your room. How much was the cost in furniture (desks) and bought from (IKEA, etc.)? Wow your room IS small. Just curious, why do people have more than one screen? What is the purpose of each?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chemb0t In reply to OmegaBahamut [2012-10-12 09:05:28 +0000 UTC]

The furniture was designed and built by myself. =] Total cost for the raw material was somewhere around $300 if I remember correctly. As far as multiple screen purposes, it's mainly so that I can have a lot of windows open. I do a lot of programming and 3d modeling so I'm constantly looking at reference material while doing my work. Typically the main editor or software would be on the center screen, additional menus, terminals and browsers on the left, and the usual 'casual' stuff like web browsers and instant messengers would be on the right.

Flashy set up there.I could probably fit that in my room but my double bed and bookcases
take up a fair bit of space...........not that i have the knowledge to make proper use of it,lol.

chemb0t In reply to Kassanovas [2012-10-12 09:07:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yes it is a very compact setup that makes good use of the space. Ideally it's better to separate your workspace from your sleeping space, but in this case I think it meshes well together. =]

chemb0t In reply to jayfoxfire [2012-10-10 02:53:53 +0000 UTC]

Ah well my room is actually quite small as well. Hence why I lofted my bed to make more space. My wide angle lens probably just makes it feel larger than it actually is. XD

HACK-THE-HEDGEHOG [2012-10-09 21:55:04 +0000 UTC]

im really jealous XD nice set-up, may i ask roughly how much it cost for the pc? and or the whole set up? ^_^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chemb0t In reply to HACK-THE-HEDGEHOG [2012-10-10 00:46:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks =] The PC cost about $2500 to upgrade. That included a new high end proc, motherboard, ram, hdd, video card and case. The 3 monitors were a little less than $1000 together, so the total for the PC itself is about $3500. On top of that, I also purchased ergonomic stuff like the monitor mounts, wire racks for under the desk to tidy up the wires, new spotlights, and the LED based ambient lighting system. The cost for that was about $200.

By no means is this a budget setup anymore, but it was well worth the price as far as I'm concerned. I'm hoping to offset the cost by taking commissions and stuff. That way I can be certain put it to good use and make it worth my while.

Heheh, I can say the same for NZ. I did make a trip to Sydney back in'08 so that was kinda recent/close though. XD

I mention it in the reply right below this one but for the entire PC setup and the new lights, mounts, wiring system, it totals up to about USD 3700. Not cheap, but it's something I definitely will be putting to good use. =]

$3700? That's not bad, considering how sweet it looks~!

Currently QQ-ing over the way this looks in comparison to my ghetto 3-monitors-of-varying-sizes-brands-and-native-resolutions setup. Something tells me I should take a leaf out of your book!
Minus the raised bed. While it's a really intelligent space saver, it would be pretty catastrophic to fall out of (;Β΄βˆ€`)
I've heard of these monitors - where did you order them from/how much did they set you back?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chemb0t In reply to laterdudes [2012-10-09 18:01:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man. =] I also came from an assorted 3 monitor setup (2 19" and one 24") and the extra screen real-estate and color consistency are a great step up.

I ordered them from red-cap on ebay for about USD 330 each. Because of the long shipping and varying quality control standards, there is a risk of getting units with stuck or dead pixels so I would recommend getting the 'Pixel-perfect' options they offer. They charge a bit more but I think it's still worth it. I mean, for the price of one 27" Apple Cinema display (which uses the same IPS panel as these), you can get three!

Ah and yes, the lofted bed does take some getting used to. I have fallen off it once but never again after that. (;Β΄βˆ€`)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

laterdudes In reply to chemb0t [2012-10-09 18:13:48 +0000 UTC]

Veeery nice! Even nicer for having a pixel-perfect option. I've been bitten by that one before. Apple really does mark their hardware up excessively Ξ£(οΎŸΠ”οΎŸ )

I agree. One of the good points (probably the only one) of having three different monitors is that you get a good feel for how your work will look to various people within an online audience, but I'm a stickler for calibrating my monitors correctly. This LG flatron just can't seem to keep up with the Viewsonic monitors... and there's even variation between the two Viewsonic monitors, as they're of different quality panels. It's doing my head in!

Tsssss, ouch. I can see why you'd learn fast from something like that, lmfao

chemb0t In reply to laterdudes [2012-10-09 18:36:59 +0000 UTC]

Heheh yeah, I know what you mean. I'm pretty picky with my monitor calibrations as well. The color variation between my old monitors was what finally convinced me to upgrade.
