It's pretty easy

  • Sketch your character. Usually shoulders up.
  • Put down all the flat colours. Try to make colours work together. So like warm colours with warm colours and cold colours with cold colours.
  • Do gradient shading. I usually use the watercolor brush in SAI. If you're using SAI, make sure to Preserve Opacity so you only colour within the layer.
  • Do cel-shading. It's the darker shading. I usually do it in places where colours might blend like the area around the head and neck. Just put it where you see fit.
  • Do the black outline around the character and the edges and do the background patterns how every you like.

    • If this is a bit hard to understand, I may or may not post a process GIF of how I do it.

    ok......... got it..............wait warm colours hmmmmm........ cold colours........ k...........to be honest i only get a little of these thing, and when i sketch my character do i do it on paper first or something else
