Description
The fairy tale "Thumbelina" is (c) Hans Christian Andersen. The 1994 movie "Thumbelina" is (c) Don Bluth / Warner Brothers. Please feel free to correct me if there is something wrong or missing.Reading the fairy tale Thumbelina for the first time I was more than a little surprised of the Prince's bold moves a) to call his bride's name ugly and b) to rename her. I can totally see where he is coming from, but it's something you don't find in any other fairy tales (or do we?). And fairy tale girls have often kinda weird names! Snow White, Briar rose, Rapunzel ...
Seeing the Thumbelina movie by Don Bluth I was thus a little curious if the movie would refer to this part of the fairy tale in any way. Well, when Thumbelina introduces herself to prince Cornelius - he calls the name beautiful! While Thumbelina finds Cornelius' name a little odd and laughs! Though she apologizes quickly and then they are done with the topic. I can't help but think this, eh, "variation" of the original fairy tale is a little wink to us saying "Tee hee, look what we've done, we still remind you of the original but we are Hollywood, so we had to make it friendlier! No more Thumbelina = ugly; now it's only Cornelius = kinda funny!"
...Speaking of the film, I think I started to watch it twice or thrice, but never got further than the first half or so. Because despite some nice parts I can't help but think the overall presentation of the story is toooo bland and childish. I also rather dislike the over-cartoonish design of most of the animals, I can barely look at some of the creatures - especially when I think of the older Bluth movies in comparison. More than a few people seem to claim Bluth's downfall started with Rock-a-doodle, I'd say it started, sadly, with Thumbelina.
Ah, yes, I forgot Cornelius' wings. Perhaps in that one moment of the picture he folds them neatly like a fly on his back?

Everyone's personal opinion is allowed!
For me many of the other "funny" animal characters were -even worse-. And uglier.

Love it
Great job
Maybe he found it offensive/racist (like calling a fairy sized person "Thumbelina," referring to her height, was derogatory)? I know her mom meant nothing bad by it, she was a sweet and kind person, but the prince, being a prince, might have found such a name inappropriate for his bride-to-be?

I agree, that must be more or less the direction of the prince's thoughts.
Calling the girl Thumbelina is in the prince's eyes probably like ... eh ... as if a nice pretty giraffe girl raised by humans got called "long-neck-lina", or a nice hippo got called "fat-lina".

Thumbelina is one of my guilty pleasures XD
Also, we wouldn't want kids thinking it's okay to let people call you/your name/your body ugly XD As I recall with the beetle ball....

That one, too. It seems that if you watch a good movie over and over again, the charm wears off and it's boring. If you watch a BAD movie over and over again, the disgust wears off and it's interesting XD
