Description   Instantly he scampered upside down along the belly of the moving ship and then up it’s side.  The now deep red sky glinted off the metal dents, patches and rivets as he climbed over them. He spared a glance over his shoulder to see the ground shooting away, the spaceport growing smaller by the second.  “Do or Die.” Flyspur had heard the expression multiple times in Rover’s westerns and Rover often quoted them himself. Flyspur couldn’t keep the words from his mind as the enormity of the moment hit him. If he jumped now he would become an unsightly purple spot on the pavement.  If the ship left the atmosphere he would freeze to death after experiencing the many other unpleasant consequences of being unprotected in space. His only chance was to get Rover to stop the ship.

A small intercept from chapter 12 of Call to the Stars:  www.deviantart.com/chill13/art…

Every time I draw I wish i was better at environments.  *sigh*  Must go practice.

Hang on TIGHT, Flyspur!!

And your backgrounds are pretty good, to be honest. Especially this 'painter-like' style. And the lighting!

Oh no! He had better get inside and quick! This is a bad situation to be in.

Yep.  He has gotten himself into an extremely dangerous, time sensitive situation!

Oh boy, this scene had me on edge! I love the curvature of the planet in this picture; it really adds to the height and trouble that Flyspur is in.

Thanks!  At this point it is probably the second most intense thing Flyspur has had to deal with.  First was leaving  his family.

You're welcome! His poor, little stomachs must have been in all sorts of knots.

Oh my gosh, this is intense!

I don't know, you seem pretty good with backgrounds and lighting. This one really adds to the image and the beauty of the sunset makes for a thrilling setting.

It's one of the most daring things Flyspur has ever done!

Aw!  Thank you!  I'm glad you think so!

Still much better than I could've done....mostly because I've never done backgrounds aside from a quick color. I've still yet to design the X'lorian home world. I'm thinking I'll use lots of reds or something. I have general ideas but nothing really solid yet. We all know I'll probably never get around to it because I put the "pro" in procrastination XD

LOL!  I understand procrastination.  Believe me!

Try starting out with some quick sketches.

Lol! "I'll get it done tomorrow!" *The next day* "I meant TOMORROW tomorrow" *Tomorrow* "Tomorrow, for sure!" *Many years later* "I'll do it eventually" and then it never happens and it's just sitting in your drafts forever and ever.

Yeah, and considering they're quick sketches they don't even have to look neat and pretty

You did really well with perspective.
You should keep working on practicing with environments. You'll get better.

Thank you!  I was hoping it would look high enough.  I've never really done this kind of angle before.

Yeah.  I should just work on that for awhile.  With HHH being sci fi I WANT to do environments.  Half the fun of science fiction is the crazy places you can go to.  And that is something that is lacking in my visuals.  And I am very well aware of it.

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2020-04-04 19:25:03 +0000 UTC]

Yep.
I think some neat environments would be the lab (I imagine it dark with green glowing tanks), the underwater Jssfloon city ruins, and maybe some nice night scenes on Jssfloon.

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2020-04-04 19:43:24 +0000 UTC]

Heh.  I have sketches of the lab.  but never colored them.  It's much easier to draw backgrounds than color them, just because of all the shading involved.  Although I have seen some comic artists give their backgrounds very little color and shading in specific way sand it looks cool.  I really need to experiment.

Jssfloon ruins sounds SO fun!  Story wise and visual wise.

I think the lab would need colored, not just sketched.

Yes, it would be. Lots of water texture.

I think maybe the reason you're not confident with backgrounds is it's really hard to do them traditionally.

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2020-04-04 22:40:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.  Maybe that's true...but I do use digital a lot.

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2020-04-04 23:13:54 +0000 UTC]

I went for years without doing much, if any, traditional, so I think that influenced the way I do art.
One thing I did with digital, and I'm not sure you do this, is I always color the background first.

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2020-04-05 00:50:20 +0000 UTC]

I have done that a few times but it is not a habit.  i know that's the best way to make your picture look cohesive.

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2020-04-05 00:50:49 +0000 UTC]

And I think it gets you focused more on backgrounds.

Thank you so much!  I played with the lighting for quite a bit before I found the balance I liked.
