Looking at this now, I'm reminded of a scene in Skyward by Brandon Sanderson where the main character wants to yell at the guy, and she, being short, climbs on a chair so she has a "height advantage." Of course, the superior officer walks into the room in time to see her standing on a chair to yell at the other student.

Skyward/Starsight are pretty good. There's a bit more war stuff than what you probably read, but the author does a really good job of showing both sides so killing doesn't end up glorified.

Yep. In the second book, the girl goes in as a spy to steal alien tech from the enemy, and then realizes "they're just like us." I love how that author doesn't make the faceless villains that can be killed for the fun of it.

They rally do have a lot in common with them!! Abigial is impulsive and emotional and enthusiastic about everything while Tom is quiet and thoughtful. Although, when it comes to the lecturer and the culprit the roles are generally swapped.

Oh yeah, I'm sure he can find a way to make her laugh. Rover probably has his quick temper and easy-going nature from them both. 
He couldn't help but notice her--the vibrant way her red curls bounced as she hopped up, stretching her hand to reach the high shelf.
"Do you need help reaching that?" He pointed to the fat purple jar easily within his reach.
"No, of course not!" She huffed, both hands now planted firmly on her hips. "Why do you ask?"
"Well you are a might on the short side." He shrugged and gave her a good-natured smile.
"I'm fun sized! Get it right!" She stamped her foot and he laughed.
After that, he starts to call her. "Hey fun-sized, come over here and look at this."

Yeah. Rover is easy going most all of the time and it usually takes a lot to get him mad. But he does have a couple buttons that will send him flying off the handle.

I have a theory as to why Abigail's mad.
Tom had been trying to plan some sort of surprise for her, and because of that, he'd been avoiding her for a while. She eventually got sick of him being so reclusive and yelled at him for it. So that's why he's smiling a little, thinking about the surprise he has for her.

Yep, he couldn't be less worried. You're right it'll probably just make her madder thsst he's not responding properly. When he realizes that doesn't work he'll probably kiss her in a minute.
