Master Easel makes me supremely uncomfortable. So much of my impression of the concepts of dominance and submission are tied to the sexual or just abuse. Yet at the same time he seems so right its, ugh, I like it. Like someone mentioned in the comments already, he's an excellent character because he makes you feel something. Plus the artistic interpretation with color theory makes so much sense, which is perfect for a smeargle.

EXACTLY, this guy give me a bdsm vibe but he's doing nothing, worse than that they are (kind of) consentant for this training so....
man this is complicated

I've been re-reading this lately.  Since that thing you posted to tumbler.   Easel has an...interesting style of leadership   I forgot how good the sense of motion was in these pages.

Ah, I admit I have a love/hate predisposition towards this team/group (haven't seen an app)! Your storytelling and action are amazing, and you portray the characters real well, but the basic concept of dominance and submissiveness as a way of life really clashes with me, and it really makes me feel like punching Easel's smug face in and kicking the other two on their shins. Again, this is good, not because of whether I like them or not but because of HOW MUCH I don't like them (which, like I said, happens to contrast with the fact that I love how you sketch too *coughisjealousocugh*). I think they're characters that, be it in a positive or negative way, make you feel really strongly about them.

As a friend said, they're characters I love to hate. Haha IDK it's hard to put into words.

Easel is MOST DEFFINITELY the type of guy my characters would consider a bad guy (regardless of him having a supposedly "softer" side"). They would also probably feel really sorry for the other two.

Yeah, it seems like people either love or hate Easel, which is definately interesting to see. And they don't have an app yet, they're NPC's at this point in time, and I'm holding off to make them a rescuer team later on when I feel it's appropriate.

You're supposed to feel sorry for Toppa. He's meant to be a sympathetic character who's also really weak and vulnerable and has a lot of unfortunate things happen to him, but as for Gene, he's actually really happy with his situation, probably more so than he ever was when left to his own devices.

But whether they love or hate him, I'm sure they all find him cool as heck. Love the whole 3D painting idea haha.

I will most surely study your action shots and try to steal some tricks from your work hahaha.

Question: do you use any guidelines for poses and then sketch over them, or are the lines on this page the only once you've used to draw it? (Also I know it's a drag to get asked this, but I'm interested in knowing the brush settings you use for sketching. I keep having trouble finding one I like. Would you tell me, if possible?)

ChillySunDance In reply to ClockworkShrew [2013-03-25 15:53:29 +0000 UTC]

The guidelines I lay down prior are very minimal. What you see is mostly what you get here.

What I typically do is try to draw the flow of action in as few strokes as possible first, and once I've got the panel planned out I go over that motion with detail. It's a little hard to explain, but I use angles a lot to dictate scene composure. It's based on a cartooning principle where a character's stance and action should at the most basic level be shown with something as simple as a single line and a circle.

After that, I erase the parts that look particularly messy or sketchy to get a cleaner look, and crosshatch in shading.

As for brush settings, I use a very fine paper texture to make my strokes a tiny bit rougher around the eges, which prevents blurriness. Other than that, I just use a hard brush with opacity pressure but size pressure turned off. This keeps my lines a consistent size and if I want variation, I'll go over the same line several times to give it volume.

Ah, I see! I will most certainly test this out later today when I have some time to sketch! Thanks for the detailed breakdown!

Fucking DAMMIT!

I gotta bust my ass off coming up with cool ideas fucking day in and day out, and you just come along and show off Master Easel and make it all look like G-ddamn garbage. You are a genius AND RIGHT NOW I HATE YOU SO MUCH.

ChillySunDance In reply to Dragon-Paragon [2013-03-23 11:31:10 +0000 UTC]

hehe, don't worry, We're all very hard on our own ideas when comparing them to others we like. You just have to tell yourself "I can do something like that! I just have to keep practicing." That's how I end up making half the stuff I put out.

Sigh.

Good work, champ xD You hit one out of the park.

Agonizing? You can't force good ideas, you have to have fun coming up with them, then it'll never feel like a chore.

I came up with this character while discussing Smeargles with the group on the irc. Everyone was like "Smeargles are always portrayed as wimpy artists." and I thought hmm, why not try to make a badass Smeargle? And it developed from there.

Maybe you're right. Please don't be offended if I try to prove you wrong. Sometimes it's just no fun unless it's a chore.

It's brilliant, really. Keeping the artist angle just makes him so much more unique-It's not just his badassery, it's his freakin' flair! Ohhh Master Easel, you're truly a gem.

Hahahaha! Ok, well that punishment was much better than I expected. I think I like Easel more now! He's one of those eccentric teachers whose methods seem completely insane until you start to truly learn from them.

He's very concious of it because he's the one who conditioned Gene's compliant nature in the first place I'd imagine.
