This has been weighing on my mind for a little while. I see time and time again, people (non MMDers obviously) who bash others who use MMD saying that it is not art and it is "illegal" because it uses someone else's work.

First I would like to address the incorrect notion that it is illegal:
The modelers give the users permission to use their model by making it available for public download. Therefore, it is indeed legal as long as credit is given where credit is due and the terms and conditions of usage are being properly followed.

Secondly, MMD (MikuMikuDance for those of you who aren't familiar with the term, is a 3D posing and rendering freeware that involves usage of 3D models) is art. People put their time and energy into creating beautiful pictures and videos using MMD.

I myself have spent a whole day on one video just making sure that it was perfect and I know others who have done the same as I have. Also, art is a form of expression. MMD is a program that people use to express love, hate, sadness, quirkiness, and all manner of other emotions using their imaginations and the models that have been provided for them.

Restricting art to the simple definition of "something you create using pencil and paper" (used as an example) is very wrong, and ignores that there are other ways of expressing art.

People put their time and hearts (and even sometimes money) in using this program and to degrade it by calling it "artless and illegal" is plain wrong. If you put your heart into it and it's art to you, then the opinions of others do not matter.

This is just how I feel on the subject. MMD is art!

Anything can be art, I think it depends on who is looking at it.
There was this painting that was literally just paint thrown onto a canvas; to me, it looked like a mess but someone bought it for thousands because they thought it was a beautiful piece.

Exactly, so I think no one has the right to say something isn't art or is artless; they may not like it, but that's their opinion, not everyone else's.

well yes MMD is a form of 3D art

tho when it first started there where rules and some people
do not know them

any who just chalk up the haterz as trolls and move on

I some day wish to learn how to make a model from a 3d rendering program learn to rig it
make the faces need sliders and so on

right now I am trying to support the rainbowlamma who does make clothes for models for MMD
I just posted orange maiden miku useing rainbow lamma's 3d rendering items
now I am going to work on the winged boots but no clothes yet got the shoes
model comes with it and I think wings for the back of the model

I already learned the basics on modeling and have started practicing myself
I've gotten help from pro modelers too like Saboten and Sowlow. It takes a lot of work, and it's not fair how every other 3d program is praised for artwork except for MMD.

Like I said to another user, I cannot draw due to a problem with my hands/fingers, so I have to use MMD or just drop random colors into Paint.Net and mess with settings to try and get an abstract picture. I used to use DA Muro a bit but that eventually started to hurt my hands as well, plus someone kept suggesting I use it to draw >> (hence why I deleted the stuff I did with it). I'm glad to see you standing up for MMD. It's a wonderful program, even though the community can be dumb.

I think, MMD CAN be art. Not everyone uses MMD to make art. Art is expression. Whatever you use to express something, or put effort into creating is art. Music can be art, Dance can be art, photography can be art, drawing can be art, MMD can be art, ect. Not everyone uses the mediums they have to create art, but all the mediums can be used to make it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chocosunday In reply to SirenLoveSong [2012-08-30 20:35:10 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly what I think. MMD is simply a medium just as music, dance, painting, etc. are.

thank you! i seriously hate it when people say MMD isnt art!! i mean some peoples art is making images out of other images (stock images) noone moans at them do they? MMD is basically the same thing!! its art whether they like it or not!! :I

chocosunday In reply to MMD-MCL [2012-08-30 20:19:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I agree. To me, art is anything that you create that means something to you no matter what you make it out of or what you use to make it. (Now there is illegal art, but that's another matter) It really shouldn't matter if others don't think of it the same way.

thank you. i was a base user before i got MMD, and i can't draw due to disability, so i've never been a part of a comunity that is considered "art" by the general public. this was very heartwarming for me.

It's nice to see other people in the same situation as me that have embraced MMD as an art form. I cannot draw due to a problem with my hands and fingers that makes it painful to grip a pencil, and even with practice, I still cannot draw with a mouse. So MMD's been a lifesaver for me, because I've come up with so many ideas, yet I can't get them out on paper. However lately I've been getting people telling me things like "Keep practicing and you can draw!". Um, that's kinda like telling a blind man "Keep practicing and you can see!", which is horribly rude.

as a multimedia arts degree major, our professor taught us the value of not giving a f*ck to stupid and baseless opinions. I am so glad I keep that in mind until now.

If you know what you are good at show it to the world. If they don't like it, ignore them and show it to someone else who is more interested.

Well, ALL the MMD pics that are around here aren't really art
Because some of them are shit

And also, MMD isn't truly art, the pictures are art itself
If you put time and imagination to make a picture, well, the picture is YOUR art c:

MMD isn't really art that much. It's not like other modelling programs. It's literally just mainly for anime purposes, etc. and music videos. It's not really art. And usually you never see anything decent done with MMD, to be honest. Usually just "crack" and "stupid/comedic" pictures that obviously were made with no effort make front page.

chocosunday In reply to elecxra [2012-08-27 18:22:40 +0000 UTC]

Well...that's not entirely true....anything that expresses emotion or portrays a feeling can be considered art no matter what the medium.

Art isn't about portraying emotions and feelings. Ever artists knows that.

Pianodream In reply to elecxra [2012-08-28 01:35:53 +0000 UTC]

You're right. Art is about EXPRESSING YOURSELF.
And since MMD can allow you to do that, it can be considered a form of art.
Even if you just like chewing papers and then pile them up to make sculptures, it could be considered art too.

About MMD pictures never being decent... I understand that feeling. As an MMD artist (yes, just yes), I sometimes facepalm from the amount of stupid pictures, that have no attention or any work put into them.
Then... You have the other side of the medal.
I'm not gonna push so far as saying I prefer making sad stuff with MMD, but my gallery is full of it so I can't really deny it.

It's not about the media that's important, it's about how you use it. Like the difference between making crosses with your pen on a paper and actually taking time to draw something, even if it turns out to be less beautiful than you expect.
