Description Though obsolete by the 42nd Millennium, the autogun is a plentiful sight on technologically inferior worlds and in Imperial Guard garrisons that hold their duty stations for centuries or millennia, whereupon supplies of lasguns are not issued as regularly as more well-supplied worlds. In response, autoguns are the standard. Powered by chemical reactions, slugs are accelerated to lethal velocities from magazines that can range from five to thirty-five or more shots. As lasguns can be fired approximately a hundred and fifty times before being depleted. Power packs are additionally lighter than the magazines autoguns take. However, the solid-slug rifles can be produced on even the most backwards of worlds in the Imperium of Man and are seen in the hands of civilians and military alike. Even second or third line defense forces carry autoguns in addition to las weapons. This ubiquity despite the presence of more advanced technology speaks to the sheer brilliance of the ancient design of springs and powder.Β

It's just a shame that the IoM doesn't exploit the fun of ballistics beyond bolters.Β  You can have so many different effects with bullets compared to laser and plasma weapons.

I think you should keep in mind the problem of logistics. Autoguns come in a large variaty of calibres, most models are caseless but not all and most grunts will just need simple bullets so the advantige of ammo flexibility goes out the window for most. Lasguns on the otherhand are about as easy to produce as STENguns and as easy to maintain as AK's. Also the power packs can be recharged with radient heat and light thus eliminating the need for ammo production.Β

But that would take innovation - something that's in extreme rarity up until, and kind of present in the current era of 40k.

True, true.Β  Innovation is Tech Heresy, even if it's how you got to the level of technology you (used) to have in the first place.

Hold on, I think that's the Inquisition knocking.

This is a big misconception that a lot of peoples make about what is tech heresy.

Innovation itself is NOT tech heresy. This is why the Mechanicus still produces new ships hulls, vehicles and patterns of weaponries.

What constitute tech heresy are the following:
- The creation of an AI (Abominable intelligence)
- Using or retro engineering Xenos technology. However the mechanicus has been known to sanction such things: the bureaucratic process, even within the well oiled machine of the Mechanicus, is pretty long however.
- Permanently damaging an STC library (you can modify existing STC concepts, but you cannot modify the original STC itself)
- Fusing technology with the daemon (second worst tech heresy right after the creation of AI)

Beyond that, you are free to innovate as much as you’d like, although the mechanicus will probably keep an eye on you to ensure that the rules are respected.

Creating a new weapon concept in the 41st millenium is NOT tech heresy: hell, if you had the permission to, you could potentially reverse engineer Tau pulse rifles for use by local, specialized elite forces (because even if remade with human materials and tech only, it would still be an impractical weapon to use by the IG because of the logistics and the sheer amount of troops a single regiment can have).

You could theorically create an iphone in 40k and it would NOT be considered tech heresy (siri would probably be seen as a retarded version of a machine spirit)

Well essentially you are right I’m just saying; making new autogun patterns would probably not even be seen as « innovationΒ Β»; just modification of an existing and understood concept
