Description A design I created last year for a Sci-fi project currently in development. The idea behind this design being that this is contemporary technology influenced by recently discovered alien technology. Because the aliens use flying saucers, I implemented this swivel propellor like system. Kind of like strapping 2 flying saucers to each wing. That way it allows the craft to fly like a normal plane but give it Apache style VTOL manoeuvrability as well.

I also gave it Badger stripes... I like Badgers

The scene composition is well crafted; however the design of the aircraft itself presents two serious flaws: you state that the craft is propeller-driven, but you present the swept-wing profile of a supersonic aircraft. The purpose of the swept-wing, the body-shape itself, the wing-blending, and the raked back tail is to accommodate the aerodynamics’ of passage through the sound-barrier. If the aircraft is not intended to possess supersonic flight capabilities – then the body shape and overall design of the wings and tail is inappropriate. If you intend to propose a propeller-driven supersonic aircraft, well kudo’s for the courage, just be aware you have a monumental problem of credibility since there are very real physical reasons why no supersonic propeller driven aircraft exist. If you are dead-set on this course you first need to understand the physics involved in order to describe how the supposed β€œalien” technology overcomes the physical constraint of propeller-blade stress-loading, among the other physical effects of passage through the sound-barrier, which prohibit propeller-driven supersonic flight in the first place.

The second, and perhaps more dire flaw: the propulsion technology you claim as β€œalien,” simply is not.

What you’ve depicted here is a form of propulsion called a ducted-fan tilt-rotor. The ducted-fan tilt rotor has been a feature of contemporary aviation design going back to the 1950’s.

See examples:

Doak VZ-4
Bell X-22 V/STOL

World-wide different nations have developed 69 versions of aircraft in the category of tilt-rotor, tilt-wing, ducted-fan, and vectored-thrust (all represent various technological design approaches to V/STOL).

As far as developing a science fiction concept, to me, this fails. What you have depicted is a common aviation technology (ducted-fan tilt-rotor V/STOL) which utilizes known laws of aerodynamics and known physics, so this does not really represent an example of technology that is advanced, or alien, in any way.

Now, if there is a considered back-story that explains the evolution of ducted-fan tilt-rotor aircraft as the result of some alien contact I note that you have neglected to present it in the image caption text – realize that if you are going to go up against 60 years of a persistent aviation technology represented by aircraft developed around the globe, your back-story should need to be very compelling.

It is believable that alien civilizations might develop versions of familiar and common aviation technology which take on surprising forms, forms not commonplace to our perspective – for example luxury liner scale twin-hulled catamaran style rigid-body airships with large ducted-fan engines – but that is not what you have done here.

When you present known and common technology as something alien you dumb-down the SF genera in general, and worse, it gives the impression that you perhaps consider your audience too ignorant to recognize the common-place technology you offer, or that you were careless and did not bother to actually research the science involved in your science fiction concept. It should be needless to say, but any of these are bad impressions which you should strive to avoid.

Why not break the mold of hackneyed scientifically illiterate motifs which have long permeated Hollywood science fiction and the gaming industry by 1. Respecting the intelligence of your audience by not presenting common technology as alien, and 2. By acquiring a confidant personal knowledge of the technology-fields within which you craft your science fiction concepts?

By following these two steps you will be on the way toward achieving a hard-edge of credibility and in the bargain enhance elements which, when sorted from common technology, can be called truly alien in both appearance and form.

Kinda like the bad guy's flying craft in the movie "The Incredibles".Β  Bet if you're being chased, you can pull the nose up while reversing those drivers 180 degrees and let the bad guy shoot passed before jumping on his tail.

I don't think the Critique by William-Black is totally fair; but it's true that if you're not aware of the show UFO or even the sort of thing that generic UFOs are supposed to have, you would easily mistake the propulsion for ducted fans.

Thanks , I guess in attempting to create a fast powerful type effect it does look a lot like propellors, will probably fill them in in future or make them more ball shaped.

I can't really argue with the more relevant side of his critique but it's a subjective medium and I respect his opinion.

So, alien tech is just big ol' glowing rotors that ruin the minimal radar cross-section of fighter jets?
