and yes, they don't look anything alike, it's done on purpose - in scandinavian mythology, Elves start life as shining, ephemeral creatures made of light, and as they age, they become corporeal, and slowly grow uglier and rot like old wood. whilst I don't think Boris is ugly, the idea is that he used to be all blonde and blue skinned like his younger brother, but their hair and skin darkens and turns brown, black or green as they age.
