Stunning!
The pose is really cool, different from the same old illustrations, and the background remember me The Great Wave of Hokusai....

Thanks. I'm a big fan of classic book/album covers so my pictures tend to look a bit 'old fashioned'. The background is marbled with enamel paint. I guess it is a bit like 'The Great Wave' - I love working with curved shapes.

I'm not sure what his mum is going to think though still he's 18 now so I guess he can do what he likes.

Thanks, Mat. The marbling is a nice effect I picked up from Roger Dean and Patrick Woodroffe. I was a bit dubious about posting this picture. I think the ship is pretty lame (more like a toy ship). I keep meaning to work it up a bit in Photoshop. Still, quite a few people on here seem to like it anyway. Actually, my nephew has just turned 18 and wants to get it as a tattoo!!!

I understand what you mean about "toy ship" , but more realism is not necessary i think : the graphic style is full of poetry , i see a very nice book cover about tales,horror..it looks a little like "old images"("and a little japanese too"^^)
Verne or Lovecraft may certainly found mystery in it and a call (^^) to an imagination journey , beyond the " dark side of their work.I don t think you wanted to do something aggresive or dark and that s cool
( you gave a nice balance to the picture ,harmony and strenght at hte same time)
This work will work well as a tattoo and chest will be a nice place for it ^^

Maybe it is a toy ship and this creature is actually small and lives in an aquarium I like your idea of a book cover - I'm a huge fan of classic fantasy paperback covers.

Thanks! I think he would be a match for Cthulhu.
