My Io’da, Tai-Mei, knew all the best stories. The ones which got you through the day during a long caravan ride to the next well- distracting you from the bumps and bruises of the road, or the ones that got you off to sleep at night following a great terror and the ones that last a lifetime and oft’ seem to take on a life of their own in each turn they are told. Other girls would come to sit around Io’da’s fire in an evening just to hear her tell her stories- but she’d always keep me and Laënthiën closest- because we were her story, she’d tell us.

It was at her knees that I first learned of our lost homeland. The verdant gardens, the majestic fountains, the wine and the food which overflowed on the balconies of each home to a symphony of the most wonderful music to ever grace an ear- and the ruin and calamity that befell it in the end and the thousand years of sorrow hence. The way she spoke of those magnificent columns and those hallowed boulevards—it almost felt like she’d walked those hallowed pathways herself.
