Description
Early Summer, Year 757 of the New Age
Glenwood, Glenmore
Brightly through the canopies, the sun shone down and glistened against the now evaporating dew. Songbirds gave way into an open chorus of euphoria, greeting the new morning - and to the herd of Glenmore, it couldn’t have been any more fitting. To them, it was a happy day - the Promise Ceremony of two important figures, a new pair bonded for the welfare of the Great Kingdom of Glenmore. Thier good blood would keep the herd members fat and happy for future generations, which would be more than enough to get anyone excited. Anyone but Jackdaw.
If it had been some other doe, maybe he’d feel the same excitement his friends and other guards felt - but to the grullo stag it had truly been one of the worst things to wake up to. Any other guard would have shrugged it off, moved on to other does, but how was he supposed to? He couldn’t picture it.
The day had to have come though, he knew it since they first met. She was a Princess Doe, saved for those of the King’s line - a privileged few who were lucky to have a catch like her. He was but a member of the Royal Guard, another stag whose only purpose was to protect the sacred lineage. They were not of high enough blood to even dare be with a Princess Doe, but since day one, Jackdaw believed in miracles. Believed that maybe somehow the ancient rules set in stone by their ancestors would bend for the will of young lovers. Believed that there would be a way to make it work, that the answer would reveal itself in a fairy tale ending, a happily ever after with a kiss under the sunset.
If anything, it was this day that slapped Jackdaw out of this fantasy.
It was his mistake, choosing to believe in something that would never be. A Royal Guard, hidden in the ranks against stags of the same abilities, could never be with a Princess Doe. Why did he even bother to think such thoughts those years ago? Why was he bothering to even attend the ceremony? His duty demanded it, but all the same he could have requested to switch duties with another stag, go on patrol and send the other guard in his place. Maybe it was to see what stag his love was to be promised to? See who he would lose her to.
His thoughts and emotions triggered something in his core. With each step, grass sprouted up like snakes and vines had started to coil around his feet. They were loose enough to brush away, but as he walked, they slowed him down, keeping him grounded. Maybe it would be wise to just wait in the Glenwood, to ignore the truth of it all and keep pretending what he wanted to believe in.
The vines grew taller on his legs, rooting him down as his mind went blank. He didn’t want to give into fact, didn’t want to face the truth that waited before him in the glade. Jackdaw was being the harshest to himself, no one - not even his father - could give him the treatment that was going on inside his head.
Something finally snapped into place in his thoughts as he realized the vines were creeping closer to the tops of his legs. He wasn’t going to the glade for himself, he was going for her, for Bó. She would be scared, almost if not more than he was. He couldn’t help much for this, he was partly there on duty after all, but he still did love her - and no matter what happened, he would be there for when she needed him. Even if they couldn’t show emotion, Jackdaw wouldn’t just abandon her.
Shaking off the vines and leaving the newly sprouted grass to wither off, he continued into the glade and found a place behind some giddy herd members. By the sound of it, the ceremony was about to start - and the sudden hush of the clearing confirmed it. At the edge of the woods, his lover strode out of hiding, her radiance appearing to light the glade. She was beautiful, with the lilies braided into her mane and tail with great care and her blue eyes shining out against her pale coat. The golden stag at the base of the Oak was lucky to have her, but below the surface of Jackdaw’s straight face, he was weeping. He was losing her here, witness to it at this very moment. He knew it was a tough moment for her as it was to him, so he did not make eye contact for the fear of causing some sort of scene. The worst images surfaced in Jack’s mind, but he pushed them all aside and stared ahead, just as the other guards did.
He could only stare into space as the ceremony continued, keeping his face as solid as he could, even when hearing the sweet voice he was so used to hearing promise itself to another. It was miserable, minutes felt like hours and Jack just wanted it to pass. He could not bear looking at the stag Bó was promised to, this Aladsair, wishing deep down it was him in that position. Still, nothing could be done, and as the newly mated pair turned and strode out the glade, Jack found himself one of the first to leave, still trying to process what had happened. Still trying to hope in some sort of miracle...-------------

Jackdaw's POV of this .
Poor Jack goes through a lot Gonna be cryin' to himself for days.
Also - no ref on this one! I finished my english final and I started sketching right after it, and then my teacher had "Princess Mononoke" on his jump drive so he's like, "ok - we have nothing to do for the next hour, lets watch this!" and oh man its such a good movie
I was sketching this while watching that movie.
Aaaaanyways, poor little Jackdaw never can get a break. Unless its heartbreak. Then he'll get a ton of that. 3
