Description Still playing around with the colored paper. Fun stuff. Still figuring out what works and doesn't. The color pencil is harder to use on this paper. I tried rendering Supergirl's face with white color pencil and it came out....iffy? Yeah, not good. The texture of this paper makes smooth color pencil work difficult. I'll have to use it more sparingly than I did on the smooth bristol where I'd often use it on skin rendering etc. This means I'll have to get better with my washes. I've improved a lot over the last year with white paint, but subtle rendering with paint still gives me headaches.

Markers, white paint and some color pencil

Bud, how are you not main series artist on Marvel's main Hulk title?! You really do have the best version of Hulk out there. You blow Ed McGuinness' (as well as everyone else recently) work on the title out of the damned water.

I particularly I love the way Spidey and Wolverine came out. Seeing you progress over the last year with these color studies has been incredibly inspiring and I think you should put a whole book together for comic-con or something 'cause they would sell like hot cakes...or something that sells really really well...oh I know, like crack! they would sell like crack. Crack sells really well right?

TonyDennison [2009-12-01 17:04:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, if you don't mind me saying: the strength of your technique lies with value not hue, so using a paperstock with mid-range tonality should be the focus, rather than using purple or orange or whatever colour...

Additionally, sticking to a mid range neutral stock (grey) is going to allow you to explore colour possibilities in Photoshop without the unneccesary influence of the coloured paper...

Just an opinion, I could be wrong...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChristopherStevens In reply to TonyDennison [2009-12-01 22:15:26 +0000 UTC]

I understand what you're saying. That's how I look at this paper actually. I don't really notice the color as much as the value. I just try to choose colors that aren't too garish. Muted and subdued. I haven't found a nice grey paper. I'd have no problem using a grey paper, though I haven't really considered coloring any of these. Though technically, I could just take the color out of the paper in PS if I wanted to color any of these.

Thanks.

TonyDennison In reply to ChristopherStevens [2009-12-03 14:51:20 +0000 UTC]

Gotcha, chief. In any case, I think it's imperative that you continue to explore this technique (not that you weren't going to anyway). It's very visually compelling and the way you're exploring possibilites with value is just... exceptional.

What I like most, is that I don't look at these images and say,"Oh. This just cries for colour." what you're doing looks complete and all the pieces are there... if colour is ultimately introduced, it wouldn't have to be more that subtle accents rather than multiple layers of masks and channels (imo).

In any case, I luv it Chris. I could see you doing an incredible Batman or Spider-Man (heck, even a Vampire) story that would just kick all sorts of ass.

Thanks, man. Color's never been an interest of mine. When others do it well, I appreciate it a ton, but I've always seen things better in b/w. I'll focus on that and keep trying to improve on it. Maybe I'll try to figure out color some day hehe.

I thought the Supergirl was the most arresting of the bunch on first look. I've always appreciated the look of colored pencil on a rough surface though. For me it keeps me from being overly concerned with line style and more on the tonal quality.
Great character in all the studies!!

ChristopherStevens In reply to billyjimbo [2009-12-01 05:08:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. It can work that way, but I don't think the texture is good for skin...at least not a pretty girl's skin heh. That's what these tests are for though.

I haven't really read DD when Bendis took over, but there was a LONG time where he was the official punching bag of the MU and that kinda turned me off the character a bit. I mean, there's having a character showing a weakness that gives character, then there's getting your butt kicked on a daily basis......LOL

actually I REALLY loved the Kevin Smith run with Joe Q.

If you were drawing him, I'd be a regular reader

You should check out Brubaker's work on DD. Awesome stuff. I don't read a lot of supers these days, but Brubaker is a great writer. I think of him as the Marvel version of Batman. Gritty and crime noir. He deals with the normal criminals more than any other super does. I do know what you mean, but his weakness also makes him compelling when he's written well.

Thanks!
