"Oh, it's still light out. Isn't there time for just one more chapter?"Books and dragons.
I've used those in plenty of art before, and it is a theme that I enjoy, so I found Temeraire's love of books quite entertaining.This is the second piece of fanart I was working on. I actually finished it last night, just before the contest deadline.
I did have to rush it a bit to finish on time, though. Normally I spend much longer on these sorts of pictures. This certainly wasn't a speedpaint, but it was a quicker piece. I might have to go back over it again and refine the scale texture a bit more sometime.
Comments and criticism are always welcome.
Edit: Improved the eye, and right front paw slightly.
Major edit: Changed the coloring. I think this color scheme looks quite a bit better on this picture. I've fixed several small errors, improved the lighting, and put a bit more coloring on Temeraire's pendant. Overall, I'm much happier with this piece now, even if the lines are still rather thick.

Awesome, these colors are a major improvement. Good job! Though I liked the pendant better when it was still silver-y, the sky makes up for it all. It looks great!

There are quite a few improvements to the shading that add to the impact, as well. I've eliminated a lot of the little distracting mistakes. I think the colors are an improvement too. It's good to hear that you think so, as well!

I LOVE THIS.
Your dragons always amaze me, and they have so much variation in colors, horns, frills, etc. and PERSONALITIES! Usually you just see big 'ole snarling lizards breathing fire.
AND THAT NECK. I can never get scales at an angle to work; you've got it down so well it almost looks 3D to me. (although I did just get up lol)

Here, I tried to get his personality right, because it's fanart based on a book. I think it turned out decently accurately. The neck was one of the areas that gave me a lot of trouble. I had a tough time with the scales, and a lot of the effect is based on the soft focus I put on this piece. I tried to put the head in focus to make a little depth of field.
It's good to hear that turned out well.

A problem with that attitude is that you read the books so fast.

I like the shading but for some reason the head just dose not sit right with me it might be a personal thing but I feel like the fin on the back of the head just wouldn't show like it is, but other then that i love the concept.
The neck look the best in my opinion but that is just me

In the book, the frills on his head kind of fan out when he's angry, so I tried to make them seem a bit more flexible, and less straight and rigid, but I can see how they could look awkward, too.

In all honesty, I don't think of this as one of your best pieces. There are certain little flaws that I know you can do better.
For example, I think Laurence's arm is too long. If he would stretch it, it would get to his knee or something.
Also, Temeraire looks a bit off to me. First of all; with a long neck like Temeraire's, holding his head like that would cost him more effort then simply lifting it in the air, because he has to bend his neck (and therefor tighten a lot of muscles) in order to put it in his paw. it doesn't seem comfortable.
And compared to the rest of his body, his snout seems a bit flat, although I can't really tell you why. I haven't figured that out yet.
As always, your color spectrum is brilliant (making a dragon look black instead of grey can be hard :/), but I feel you went wrong with the thicker black contours. I don't know why, it just doesn't do much for me.
Not that those are big flaws. I mean, the colors are perfect and the shading is pretty neat too. It's a good piece of art. It's just not my favorite from your gallery.

Sorry for the slow reply, too. I've been having a rather busy week, and haven't had time to get caught up on my messages yet.
Anyway, I think all your observations on this piece are quite accurate. This one was rather frustrating for me to work on, partially because I wanted to rush it, to submit it before the contest ended, and partially because of a few mistakes I made while I was working on it that I didn't notice until after the contest ended. I'm not completely satisfied with it, so I share your sentiments.
Overall, the thick outline is that part that bothers me the most, too. I didn't notice the problem with Lawrence's arm, or the awkward position of Temeraire's neck before. Thanks for pointing those out. Now, I think I'll be able to fix Lawrence's arm with a small edit, but I don't think I can fix the position of Temeraire's head and neck without re-drawing the picture. There is a bit of awkward shading on Temeraire's snout that I can fix easily, as well.
It's good to hear that the coloring turned out well, too. It was rather difficult getting Temeraire to look like a black dragon, without making the lighting seem quite abnormal. That is a challenge that I'm sure I'll have to attempt again some time.
I plan on learning from my successes and mistakes, and this one definitely showed me some areas where I need some practice. For instance I'm planning on sketching my next few pieces out with shapes, rather than outlines, so hopefully they should look quite a bit more natural.
