Description
My first Avatar-inspired deviation!I could have gone for a ground view showing one of the many epic landscapes. But that can always be done later. I don't see much of the space scene seen very early on in the film, so that combined with the fact I promised many people my next 360 "Vue It" work was going to be a space one just meant it was the right theme to choose. It was at least lighter in polygon count than my first two that were very "tree-heavy" bumping their polygon counts into the several millions which resulted in countless crashes. Still had a fair amount with this but comparatively not as bad so bouts of swearing while making this was minimal
As for technical aspects, this was testing a version of Vue that can't actually render planets to its limits, that along with clever use of postwork allowed me to simulate a pretty authentic looking world below the viewer anyway. Rendering would have taken eons for me and so I got help, so I'll jump to credits for help before continuing:
Anyway, this required constant hopping between Vue 7 and Photoshop as some areas needed to be painted on and then brought back into the 3D world again to be rendered with the right amount of distortion and then composed in Photoshop again etc. I won't ramble on, Ill just say it was as hard to do as it looks, so just enjoy it!
Vue it - Pine Shrine
Vue it - Christmas Village
Vue It - Holiday House
Vue It - Haunted Harvest

It's nice to see the only tolerable part of that movie in a deviation like this.

THExDUKE In reply to ??? [2011-06-27 14:04:29 +0000 UTC]
lol...Really nice. Did you use the spherical-Render Option for this?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Chromattix In reply to THExDUKE [2011-06-27 14:24:50 +0000 UTC]
Spherical render is easier, but only if one has no intention of overpainting afterwards because that format is so heavily distorted at the top and bottom making those areas near impossible to paint over while still considering the distortion I was advised to use the "box" method, by setting the camera to square with a 90 degree FOV and then rendering six unique tiles - forward, right, back, left, up and down. If the camera's settings and rotation is done precisely, all the renders should join up to form a classic cub-net shape seamlessly...with less distortion to have to deal with too, making matte painting easier
But if you can just get Vue alone to deliver the scene you want without needing postwork, then spherical render is simpler and recommended.

THExDUKE In reply to Chromattix [2011-06-27 15:45:28 +0000 UTC]
Ok, but with the box method you run into the issue that at least one shot will be reveresed. I can see that effect e.g here when you look back. I understand why that happens, but i would not have any solution for that
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Chromattix In reply to THExDUKE [2011-06-27 21:53:22 +0000 UTC]
I don't see how the back area is reversed, otherwise it wouldn't join up with the surrounding cube-faces properly, the whole image flows together
It does have one other advantage though - it's easier to get the whole thing a bigger resolution when rendering six "tiles" than trying to render one massive image. Also spherical renders are only half as high vertically as horizontally while this method is a bit more - about two-thirds the resolution vertically which helps even out the quality too (spherical renders usually look sharpest up and down and blurrier horizontally)
like I said, spherical is definitely easier, I thought the cube method was weird at first but its better for postworking and for times when your computer refuses to render one huge image

THExDUKE In reply to Chromattix [2011-06-28 07:26:20 +0000 UTC]
Its when you start the image from begining and look down. The areas initially behind you are kind of "reveresed" perspective wise. Its probably because of the technique and may come out worse if it would be a different image...maybe a city from top or a cariterior...I dont know it just feels strange. But nothing to be worried about for you and this great image here. Dont want to fuck around!
Anyway, thanks for the detailed explanation. Iยดll keep an eye on your work!
