Description This is that "something much more interesting" thing I said I was going to make based on what I learned from =nukeation 's Vue video tutorial - the raw results of which can be seen in my Procedural Vue terrain deviation.

Been wanting to illustrate a binary sunset scene for a long time. For the un-educated - a Binary system is where there's two stars or "suns" in the center of a solar system instead of one these "double stars" are surprisingly more common than single stars like our own Sun. Often both stars will be a similar size and colour/temperature, but to make this more interesting, we see a larger but cooler/dimmer red star accompanied by a brighter, hotter white one...The collective heat from two suns would probably make this planet very hot! But listening to science alone can really limit one's creativity - so I still included a civilisation, water and some really odd-looking foreign plants too for art's sake

Well as stated already, this started out as a rather basic Vue scene. I saved time by recycling the same terrain for the landscape that I made after watching the tutorial - I also was able to use some sci-fi building models I made last year too. All this put under a a different lighting/atmosphere setting provided a very different base for me to matte-paint over (this is one of the few deviations I have that I think could be passed off as being a matte-painting )

Artwork is made and copyrighted by me and therfore should not appear on any other site or gallery without permission from me

I actually think the least alien like trees would be those shrubby type ones, I guess all alien worlds have some Earthlike trees as "filler plants" making the signature "alien" ones stand out more, I remember they did similar in Avatar - lots of normal Earthlike plants with some really strange ones here and there to remind us it wasn't a typical rainforest desert worlds would be much more common I think, even if they aren't "hot" deserts (like Mars) but this one indeed would be a very hot place during the day

Well, considering that it's a binary system, and the planet is close enough for a fairly large desert yes. You're right.

I thought some forests on planets look like Canada! (joke)

Thankyou! I am a sucker for bright orange colours in sci-fi art myself, so it was a pleasure doing this one

...........did I ever comment on this? I guess I didn't.

Ooh, this is awesome! The orange glow makes it seem.... sinister... but the vegetation watching the scene here in the foreground help it retain it innocence... very balanced. The bustling of the city seems to dissipate as sun sets on it, only to anticipate the outburst of the nightlife.... golly, I've gone beatnik again.

I like it! And now I wish I had a few monies left in my bank account....

Chromattix In reply to InfiniteFruit [2009-12-31 10:47:54 +0000 UTC]

Well you've commented now a more blue sky would have bene more realistic but the orange suits what would be a very hot desert-like environment here , one can imagine the city's inhabitants spend more time out enjoying the nightlife than out roasting during the day lol, they'd probably have air conditioners running non-stop too only those specially-adapted plants can handle the heat

If this world was like my art we'd still be treating it the same, when something has been there throughout all of shirtoy it dosn't seem like a big deal

Yeah, I do get sore eyes at times, mainly only when it's late though, I consider myself lucky that I don't need glasses though

Very nice atmosphere. The terrain is nice with that alien plants. The fog on the background help the sense of two suns more to be more real. The city is beautiful. The clouds are good, but i think that they not mach with the entire scene, specially the clouds in the upper left corner

but as always, amazing composition and POV

Cheers

Chromattix In reply to thiagochackal [2009-12-07 13:05:15 +0000 UTC]

Phew, if the clouds are the only flaw then I should consider myself lucky I doubt a place like this would have much clouds at all actually, though if there's plenty of water you may get one extreme or the other - bubbling pillars of rapidly rising cumulus clouds or cirrus-like clouds blasted away from the sunniest spot of the planet due to the heat of two suns...Since I wans't sure, I settled for something generic

Glad you liked the rest though

Another beautiful piece of yours ^^ I really love the colors (despite the fact that i actually don't adore orange color!) - Looks like very interesting place to explore - i'd probably be visiting, at least for the magnificent sunset

Chromattix In reply to ltdalius [2009-11-10 05:26:22 +0000 UTC]

I actually am fond of warm colours in art, I guess they stand out more, even though Purple tops my list I could have gone for more realistic colours but it would have lost impact and that "hot" feel, so I'm glad you like these colours

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ltdalius In reply to Chromattix [2009-11-11 22:06:23 +0000 UTC]

Don't get me wrong, i love warm colors and agree that they really help things to stand out... and purple is great color, actually purple and green-blue are my favorite colors -- More real than this? Man, this looks almost as an photo! And that haze really gives much to the overall atmosphere

yeah, i was a bit shocked when i found out they were more common...i guess our planet is even more special then!

Chromattix In reply to viper9369 [2009-11-08 12:04:16 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou, I'm a fan of orange colours in art myself The fact there's more binary stars than single ones makes us lucky we were around our current Sun, otherwise we may not even be here right now, life on a Binary star system planet would hardly have a chance to even begin

viper9369 In reply to Chromattix [2009-11-08 12:06:07 +0000 UTC]

yay for orange!
yep, we are ridiculously lucky, yet so many people still don't belive that climate change is destroying the earth...*sigh*

Materia-Arts In reply to ??? [2009-11-05 10:17:36 +0000 UTC]

I think possibly only a gas giant like Jupiter would be able to survive a binary system and its orbit would be very interesting to see indeed. For art sake this is very cool, never mind the science.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Materia-Arts [2009-11-05 13:32:28 +0000 UTC]

The gravity between two stars would probably destroy a terrestrial planet if it were large and heavy enough, unless it was orbiting reasonably distant (if anyone asks wy the suns are so big, tell e'm this is zooming in on a distant city like they do in those photo's of islands sunsets or African sunrises that make the sun appear bigger )

One could probably even imagine this is a moon of a Gas giant, though that would make an even weirder three-way gravity pull

Circlejourney In reply to ??? [2009-10-10 03:10:35 +0000 UTC]

Technically...having two suns at the centre of a solar system would result in a chaotic orbit and severely fluctuating seasons, making it impossible for life to form on the planet...

Ah, but what the heck. I absolutely love this picture--especially that sunlit water! Great piece

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Circlejourney [2009-10-10 10:46:52 +0000 UTC]

I've always wondered how a planet would orbit around two suns, and would they ever have the same repeating orbit path like we do or if it will vary on each loop due to the suns going around each other at a different rate...better yet, I wonder what it would be like when one sun passes in front of the other

But yes, I had to neglect that to stop the scene from being barren and desolate. Maybe life was imported here from other planets instead

Any chance that we could get the bigger/fuller image of this at 1900x1200 so we can use it as Desktop Wallpaper? It looks like theres trees getting cut off on the left.

One of the best digital scenes I've seen. Would love this use it as my wallpaper but this is just to small

Sorry, but too many idiots saved my work and uploaded it to their own sites as "their original wallpapers" so I've stopped sharing high-res versions of my art ages ago. Any bigger and I would have to put a big ugly watermark on it

Glad you liked the art though
