Description
This is that "something much more interesting" thing I said I was going to make based on what I learned from =nukeation 's Vue video tutorial - the raw results of which can be seen in my Procedural Vue terrain deviation.Been wanting to illustrate a binary sunset scene for a long time. For the un-educated - a Binary system is where there's two stars or "suns" in the center of a solar system instead of one
Well as stated already, this started out as a rather basic Vue scene. I saved time by recycling the same terrain for the landscape that I made after watching the tutorial - I also was able to use some sci-fi building models I made last year too. All this put under a a different lighting/atmosphere setting provided a very different base for me to matte-paint over (this is one of the few deviations I have that I think could be passed off as being a matte-painting
Artwork is made and copyrighted by me and therfore should not appear on any other site or gallery without permission from me

Heh... maybe the people/creatures found a way to cool down the climate using very advanced technology? *looks at Spore*

Maybe they did Maybe that water was brought to the planet by harvesting icy comets, or the plants were eco-engineered to last outside long enough to produce more cooling Oxygen into the atmosphere

Amazing as usual dood, love the composition and the colour tones (They are very much the "in" colour tones right now...[link] )
Love the binary system, and the water is just right !! Well done there ! Keep it up !!

Are they really? I had no idea that certain colour schemes went in and out of fashion, I just thought people chose what best fit a scene
Though I admit I'm a fan of warm colour slike these - but I try to use each colour regularly between peices

Most of the time you are completely right, people tend to choose what fits best in a scene. That choice is shaped by experiences and things you;ve seen that make you think a certain thing (be it colour , shape etc) is aesthetically pleasing. So what I am saying in essence is that it is possible in a hub of creativity such as dA we occasionally get influenced by similar things.
That is not to say that it is neccessarily so in this or any other case, but it is more of an observation of general dA behavior. And its a good thing, quite often I see variations on the same theme done by completely different people with a very similar idea of what looks good.
Anyway I digress. |
This deviation is amazing and I love the colour scheme. Keep it up !

Wow that's very nice. It has a mixture of both like the ancient time of the dionsaurs, and mix with things from the future.
It also looks like concept art for a movie or something like that.

That's a good description, I love scenes that have a mix between a prehistoric feel and a futuristic one, the colours and types of plants are probably what gives that primitive feel, while the buildings and smoggy-like atmosphere are the futuristic parts

The galaxy is a wondrous place.
How I'd love to see something like
that in real life.
Two stars, one red and one yellow.
One orbits the other, and several planets
orbit around them. Two mini-systems in one.
Don't mind me. My mind's a little imagination-crazy
after a nice cold bath.

I don't mind, you practically just wrote what I was feeling and thinking when I made this anyway it would surely be an odd system, I hope I'm still alive when they come up with a good theory on how a planet would orbit two stars that also move...would make creating a believable sci-fi scene more interesting, but it could just as well go the other way and prove life couldn't exist in such systems
Thanks for faving too!

Not to MENTION the gravitational weirdness that would be going on for a planet orbiting two stars (both of which are orbiting each other, too). But, as you say, science isn't particularly conducive to art, and who knows? maybe some life-form CAN live on a crazy-ass world like this.
Excellently well done, a masterpiece of sci-fi.

Yes, it would be a weird orbit and seasonal change seeing how two suns are going around each other whilist the planet orbits them both at a different speed - which will make any changes hard to predict...I wonder what their calendars look like and yeah, the fun in sci-fi is the challenge in making something a bit oriented towards fantasy (which is what couldn't possibly exist) and trying to bound it to the limits of science in most cases to make for an unusal, but believable scenario

Lol, yeah - I'm afraid I don't get what you mean about the ratio Glad you enjoyed it though, yeah - I went for something a bit more natural in terms of moons and just gave this planet one small one
thanks for the fave too!

You're welcome! I loved the exotic plants, and that energy building thing on the left. Most widescreen formates for contemporary movies are made with the width being 2.35 times wider than the height. "Armageddon" is an example. A few of my deviations are submitted in this ratio... I'm such a nerd. [link]

nice work! It's great you didn't just go for realism here and it was very interesting to read about binary systems lol, I didn't really know anything about them.

Chromattix In reply to ErikShoemaker [2009-06-09 13:33:55 +0000 UTC]
Lol, actually - I was trying to go for realism here, it just didn't work I'm starting to think that I'll never be able to shake off the slightly "cartoony" nature of my work...which probably means I'll be no professional matte-painter...but if I can work for games or animated children's shows - I'd be happy
That info on Binary systems was just what I already knew off the bat - there's a lot more I bet, but nobody wants to read an essay when the picture speaks for itself

lol, I think I'd always recognize your pics when I see them, I can't say that for many artists... maybe it's your vue renders that make your works look cartoonish, or even the coloring. Your pics are always very vivid which is not the case for most other Matte paintings..
Better stick to your own style and your originality!

I'll dissapoint you and say that BOTH sun's were postworked in
It is possible though, Just look at this [link] I have no idea how the artist managed to do that there was a sun right in the middle above the water in mine here, but I edited it out and made two new suns in place of it...Using the blending modes "linear dodge" or "colour dodge" does seem to assist when creating self-luminous things in Photoshop though...the sun's were probably the easiest part of the whole pic

Oh wow - you did a good job of photoshopping the sea reflections in then. I have experimented with alpha planes with a SSS material and a mask with a point light behind them - for a distant second sun. The results are a bit iffy but I have not tried it with 7 yet

Now this is just outstanding! the Concept, the color, the use of fiction and science all in one, though ignoring a few laws of nature.. but who knows... maybe we're all wrong and you're so right. lol
Anywho, Love the color, the feel, the plants, and most of all those freaking beautiful clouds!

Thanks a lot! Yep, Fiction + Science = a successful science-fiction concept it's true that I went a bit off the rails in terms of what is physically possible, but as we both know - sci-fi is occasionally allowed to bend the rules to make for some interesting stuff
I hardly ever draw these types of clouds...at leats not in daytime scenery, they tend to look better at sunset and alien plants are enjoyable for me to come up with too, I already have ideas for other planets, but I'll pace them out among other things...don't want to use up all my best concepts too fast
thanks for the fave too!

Incredible sunset, the building fit well the scene, is there any limitations for importing 3d objects to Vue?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to HANxOPX [2009-06-09 11:18:28 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! As for importing, it depends mainly on what version of Vue you have...I think you can only import if your version of Vue ranks at either Pro Studio or upwards, the others (which I think are "Esprit" and "Easel") can't do that unless you buy an extra module for it...back when I used Vue 6, I had Pro-Studio (the middle-ground one, not the cheapest, but not the best) and I could import in that...Now I use a much higher version - Vue 7 Infinite which has all the major features...the only version higher than Infinite is xStream, which costs a mint but is only neccessary if you are part of a movie studio or do a lot of animatons anyway
It supports all the main 3D object files, I'm pretty sure. The most popular seems to be the "OBJ" file type, but my C4D can't export as that for some reason, so I use the much-less used "DXF" file format when exporting objects...it works, problem is with that format - I have to re-texture everything once imported to Vue (but many times, the procedural materials in Vue are good, and they use much less memory than image-based textures too )
