Description This is that "something much more interesting" thing I said I was going to make based on what I learned from =nukeation 's Vue video tutorial - the raw results of which can be seen in my Procedural Vue terrain deviation.

Been wanting to illustrate a binary sunset scene for a long time. For the un-educated - a Binary system is where there's two stars or "suns" in the center of a solar system instead of one these "double stars" are surprisingly more common than single stars like our own Sun. Often both stars will be a similar size and colour/temperature, but to make this more interesting, we see a larger but cooler/dimmer red star accompanied by a brighter, hotter white one...The collective heat from two suns would probably make this planet very hot! But listening to science alone can really limit one's creativity - so I still included a civilisation, water and some really odd-looking foreign plants too for art's sake

Well as stated already, this started out as a rather basic Vue scene. I saved time by recycling the same terrain for the landscape that I made after watching the tutorial - I also was able to use some sci-fi building models I made last year too. All this put under a a different lighting/atmosphere setting provided a very different base for me to matte-paint over (this is one of the few deviations I have that I think could be passed off as being a matte-painting )

Artwork is made and copyrighted by me and therfore should not appear on any other site or gallery without permission from me

Maaan this is beautiful!

I really wanna use it as my desktop background but its a little small for my 1920x1200 res...

You should really consider doing some high res wallpaper versions of your artwork, I want to displayyyyy them. xD

Thankyou! I'm afraid I stopped offering wallpaper-sized artworks ages ago since too many people and websites were taking my pictures for their own benifit which is too bad, since I really wish I could display them bigger since there's a lot of detail in ecah one

That's really a shame, I guess I'll have to stick to stretched out pixelated ones then. D=

Oh well, somebody always has to ruin it for the rest of us I guess.

At first the two suns looked odd... (im sure you tilted your head a little during the process ) but it really does look cool.. makes you wonder... I love the contrast between the futuristic cities and the mountain landscape with the almost egyptian looking pottery. Very cool and enjoyable scene man, nice one!

Chromattix In reply to synax444 [2009-06-10 00:50:44 +0000 UTC]

When it comes to showing the Sun at sunset - a very simple glowing disk is often all you need for realism yeah, I spent a lot of time moving them around and changing their colours and brightness. But I think this was a satisfactory result

Hmm, I guess one building does look a bit Egyptian-ish, but in case you were referring to the foreground elements - those odd vase-like shapes are the trunks of some odd alien trees

I was shocked when I realised that binary stars were as common, if not - more common than single stars...Though I can imagine life would be hard on them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

00alisa00 In reply to Chromattix [2009-06-10 06:01:04 +0000 UTC]

Indeed!
Binary systems are really very common in our Universe
(but we can have also triple and multiple star systems )
Usually binary systems gravitate around a centre called Center of mass
If these two stars are too close(gravitationally)
there could be a transfer of mass from a star
to another causing a deformation of the two with consequent gas flow

Astronomers cannot observe directly, with a telescope I mean,
the presence of planets on other systems cause they're too distant
you know that the star closer to us is Proxima Centauri
well,it is distant "only" 4 light years and this means that is impossible to observe a planet
the only way to find the presence of a planet, but only of big dimensions like our Jupiter,
is with hard measurement like the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram(to find if
there are traces of chimical elements that can prove the existence of a planet)
well,I won't be too long but a planet with two stars can be possible
cause maybe the amount of the heat of the two stars
can be the same of our star, the Sun
It'd be interesting to observe a mutual eclipse of the two stars

Sorry for this long reply, but when it's time to talk of Astronomy,I go crazy

Chromattix In reply to 00alisa00 [2009-06-11 01:26:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I did a scene where one star is pulling the other's gas towards it like you said a while ago last year I didn't know they could find planets through that method though, my fave would have to be how they measure a star moving over the course of a few days wor weeks as a big planet pulls on it...but yeah - that's no good for tiny Earth-like worlds

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

00alisa00 In reply to Chromattix [2009-06-13 07:47:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah,I remember that work
your works are always well done
keep it up!

and yes, actually it's a hard way to find the presence of a planet
but no worries!Astronomers know very well their own work
and if they find a big planet,it's almost sure they'll find a whole system of planets
about Earth-like worlds you'd consider this:
we have the propensity to think that our life
is the only possible in the Universe,a sorta of Ptolemaic life ,
I mean a life with oxygen and water and all the stuff
but this is not true,we can have infinite different kind of lives
for example we have form of bacterias that can resist in a sea of marsh gas
and at the same time they can live on our Earth
we are not at the centre of all,we must consider also other existences
the famous aliens! ha ha ha just kidding
we'd open our minds...

Priteeboy writes: "But listening to science alone can really limit one's creativity..."

For the most part, at least. Only paying attention to part of the science behind something can create some interesting ideas. For instance, when studying chromosomal genetics in school, and noticing some of the more interesting and unique cases of genetics out there (such as how there's SO MUCH variety in the dog species, and the unique cases of hybrids, such as the mule and the very real and very big liger ) expanded my ideas for designing creatures. Of course, I had to conveniently ignore a few things, such as the fact that hybrids are often sterile.

The convenient thing about genetics is you can explain everything you come up with with the answer "It's all in the genes."

Chromattix In reply to Rambios [2009-06-10 00:36:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I get what you mean. In some of my other pics I do restrict myself to only what could possibly happen and try to come up with the best I can within reason but here I made some things as they might be for real, but on the other hand - a planet with two suns like this would be far too hot for any water or plants to survive as we know it, and building a city there would be impractical - so I mean't that for this one I had to break the scientific barriers to make the image more than just a barren landscape

Oh, I never would have guessed it was possible to create a Liger - forgive me for laughing at the other hybrid's name - Tigon interesting
