Description Someone was asking how I created my Grey Fox (Metal Gear Solid) costume found here

First picture shows the unpainted helmet with completed mask section. The separate mask is fixed in place with four very strong magnets fitted into the sides (roughly at my temples) of the helmet earlier on, and the "wings" of the mask.
The mask's structure is critical; size of the eye slots to allow peripheral vision and housing for the cyclops eye (seen picture 2) which IS a bicycle reflector. The mask is strengthened the same way as the helmet (made with metal mesh and masking tape and applied with thin layers of paper mache.
The third picture is comparing the shapes of the two helmets I'd made. The "bucket" helmet was 2 years before and was (in hindsight) awful! Made from paper mache over a balloon. The new one, seen in an early stage, having been built around my head, is much more elegant and streamlined.

See "part one" of this costume creation here

It's a start toward something great, I know it -- you've got a good base to work from, that's for sure *thumbs up* I can say for myself after finishing my own Gray Fox helmet that it's no easy feat what-so-ever to get the design correct. You absolutely have to know the composition of the helmet in order to achieve its originality, but not only that..you have to actually be able to draw the helmet in its entirety, and that in itself is not easy *frown*

Cheers!

Thanks man.
It is a very, *very* organic design, making it hard to construct. It either works or it really doesn't.
Not to mention that anatomically Grey Fox's helmet is completely flush against his head (most realised cosplays tend to look pretty bulky and fat-headed as a result). My rather makeshift attempt was about as thin and flush as you can get
Your grey fox attempt looks pretty slick I must say. Keep it up!

Thanks.
I don't know how I'm gonna find all the materials...especially a hood like what you used. Maybe a helmet would work too? (Like putting a helmet on my face...even though that's going to feel funny.

No, I understand it now. just wondering t=if the mesh was really thin and loose, like paper itself.
Hoping you had the masking tape stick out instead of in too.

Haha, yes, the masking tape was actually strips stuck to each other's sticky sides.
The mesh is a thin modeling mesh yes, quite fine and easy to bend into shapes, craft shops and even car/bike shops have it usually.

cjhonline In reply to JPthemarine [2010-07-28 20:53:13 +0000 UTC]

Hey JP.
For this, as described in Development part 1, I made a lattice work of masking tape literally around my head, then reinforce it with wire mesh and paper mache later. Then I built it up with further paper mache layers - sanding it smooth afterwards. This way just gave the helmet the closest fit possible.
Wish I had more photos of the process, but I hope that helps

very nice!
the reflector was a clever idea for the "eye," I wouldn't have thought of that.

Thanks Cheap and light-weight!

I spent most time trying to think of something for the eye, it's the most important part of the costume in a way.
I tried to dream up a way of fitting an LED so it lit up lol Or even one of those push-pad lights you can get.

In the end the reflector was most plausible hehe
