Description I see many, many people aroud who think that autism is just "social awkwardness".

Wrong. If you think that being autistic=being just socially awkward, let me tell you that you didn't understand what autism is at all. You're not even close.

Social awkwardness itself means nothing, and it's not enough to get an autism diagnosis.

Autism is a neurological disorder, that has a lot of symptoms and variants and just classifying it as "social awkwardness" is very wrong, and spreads the false stereotype that everyone who is a little shy/introverted is autistic, or that all autistic people are shy/introverted.

Autism is not simple social awkwardness. I'm not going to write here what autism is, there are plenty of stamps here on dA that explain it very well and also on the web you can find a billion of good descriptions of the real autism, not of the "socially awkward kid"-stereotype.

Inform yourself, before applying the autism label on yourself/somebody, just because you are/that person is socially awkward, or just before getting the wrong idea of what autism is.

This is not something you can "grow out of" or "get over". If you are born with it, you are born with it. Period.

I agree with every point.

So, I may be awkward myself, but that doesn't explain or address every-which other issue autism brings me, socially or otherwise. I will always consider awkwardness a separate thing from what I have (despite any influence it may play upon it on occasion), as it seems more of a personality-trait of which anyone in the world could have. People need to stop generalizing and start putting in the effort to actually understand why we are the way we are, and the 'unreal' hindrances we come with. It also really hurts that people would think: "just because one little thing, I must be this." In many ways, it hurts because they could be bringing themselves down with it, it hurts because they don't understand how impacting it would be if they really had it, it can hurt all ends of that issue and UGH, when people use that to their possible advantage as an excuse for some of the things they do, it's just salt in the wound. For serious!

All in all, thank you for this stamp. I will cherish that this issue has been so vocally acknowledged. It really needs to be cleared up and taken care of... Some day, with hope.

panic attacks / meltdowns

my sensitivity to sound ( screaming babies/children are one of the worst triggers)

I have had unusual fears since childhood, wouldn't be surprised if autism had a big part in it

When i was younger, i was falsely diagnozed with autism. Probably because my psychologist was amateur and throught exactly this. I am socially awkward, sensitive in some sense's and i can be strongly interested in something, but that isn't enough. ( I have ADD, through )

Indeed. I hate to self-promote (not my intention), but they need to understand that there's certain interests that we REALLY get into without our control, there's obsessive thoughts that won't stop, there's many people with many different coping skills and some scream and tear down walls while others want to do that but bottle it up inside.

There's just a lot that people never understand. Things like the sun's rays feeling like thousands of needles jabbing into my skin; people always wonder why I stay inside on sunny days. Things like a dog barking making me want to curl up and hide. Things like eye contact terrifying me, human touch making me panic.

PinkieTane [2014-08-10 02:38:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes, thank you.
There's a difference between being socially awkward and socially disconnected. It has a lot more symptoms than just social misunderstanding. I have many strange habits (I used to do the hand flapping thing, now I just fidget with my feet.) Plus, loud sounds always made me unable to move, for some reason. Whenever I would turn the TV up too loud, someone would have to come in and turn it down (I would just curl up and cover my ears, sort of paralyzed.)
Quirks aside, it's much more complicated than social awkwardness and no case of autism is the same. I love it when people recognize this, and hate it when people just call themselves autistic because they (and not a doctor) came to the decision through minimal research.

I have the Asperger's Syndrome and I approve this stamp 100%.

Being Autistic doesn't only mean social difficulties, it means so much more.

deideiblueyez described it perfectly, it is much more painful than just being ''socially awkward''. I had being diagnosed at the age of 5 (if I remember correctly, when I was in kindergarten), and I still wasn't able to speak. I have social difficulties as well (aka shyness and insecure feelings with new people).

Also, I don't support changes very well when it comes to a routine (Per example, going to a new school or moving away to somewhere else). It feels like my space is being separated from myself and I feel quite unsecure, once being to the point of crying from fear and stress.

I have obsession tendencies when I come over some kind of subject (like fish and drawing, per example). I had a special code for it: Each time I wold go too far in a certain subject, my parents would say ''blue''. As strange as it sounds, it helped me to control better my obsessed tendencies.

I never really was in a group until this year and last year, I was a bit lonely. A friend of mine helped me to get trough this and now, I have the best friends I would ever have. Thanks to her, or else, I am sure that I would have been in a depression. My freshman year is probably one of the best years I would ever have when it comes to entering in class and meeting new people.

Still, being Autistic did not stop me from being good at my hobbies. At my last year of primary school, I had about 124.5% in English class from my school report, I was named ''one of the best regional writers'' (aka good in French and English writing), I do very good drawings, I won 1st in my primary school's ''Olympic games'', I sing good, etc. Every Autism types or syndromes have their ups and downs, just like any mental illness.

It's pretty much all I wanted to say, and again, I approve your stamp 100%.

deideiblueeyez [2013-11-06 01:52:37 +0000 UTC]

It's so much more painful than that.

-Not understand that what you said was hurtful.

-Not being able to adapt to change because it's like your whole world fell apart the second someone decided to change things up a bit without warning or without your consent

-Rejecting the touch of other human beings because it just makes your whole body scream in pain or just freak out at the sensation

-Having to cover your ears because something as innocent as someone crumpling up a piece of paper is like knives jamming themselves into your ear drums

-Not being able to relate to people or understand your own feelings until they're right up in your face and you realize at the last second that there's something wrong

-Not being able to take your eyes or focus off of one thing and multitask..

Yeah I've had trouble with these kinds of things... :/
