Description
This is a set of studies I did based on film stills from Fellowship of the Ring. What I wanted to do was "boil down" the scenes to their composition and basic values (3 to 5 shades) and see what could be gleaned as to how they convey certain messages and emotions with only these most simple tools. The individual frames are 1.6" wide, sketched with a mechanical pencil and comments are below. I picked up some interesting insights and heartily recommend any art or film student to follow the same concept as a means to further understand the visual medium. Please DOWNLOAD to see FULL SIZE.

I remember doing this in college. I thought it was a crazy assignment, but it does help a lot. We had to take b/w movies for it though--I chose Casablanca

Casablanca would be a good choice. You have to be kinda discerning though, not all movies have good cinematography and lighting but there's a lot to learn from others. LOTR, Pride & Prejudice and The Last Samurai all have great cinematography and would be great modern choices.

Yeah, I heard Pride and Prejudice was a good one. And The Last Samurai is one of my personal faves and truly excellent cinematography.
It's funny, since I had to watch and re-watch and pause the movie so often, I can't even watch it anymore
