Description Some people requested to see the creation process of my piece Yoko and being the nice chap that I am, I'm happy to oblige. Unfortunately, I didn't take many snapshots along the way as I have with other pieces but this should give you some idea. This character was no person in particular.
If you have questions, just post'em. Cheers

The original drawing was in pencil which I painted over in Photoshop.

Very nice piece, Clint. I went over and faved the finished image, and was glad to see this with a little more attention to the detail close-ups.

Could you elaborate a little more on how you do the hair? Do you "rough" in the general shapes first, or go right to conception? How many layers do you usually work with? Just some general thoughts...

Keep up the fine work!

On the hair I broke it into two steps basically. Well, three if you count the drawing but that was already done before the painting so once in PS I blocked in the color and value of the hair first. If the color and values didn't read right then the finessing wouldn't matter. After that I focused on edges which was a slow and deliberate process. I looked at every edge and group of hair and decided where it should be sharp, strong, soft, blended or lost. For some of the groups of hair I painted the section bigger than I needed it on a new layer and erased down to the shape I wanted then merged it down. This can be a great technique in the right situation.
For processing sake and to keep things streamlined I try to keep under thirty layers, closer to ten is preferable. My habit now is to take Snapshots often which decreases the need for as many layers.
Thanks for the questions and the kudos.

That raked brush you use gives it a fantastic impressionistic look... do you use that brush the whole time or do you switch to a more texturey brush for the details?

No, I primarily use the raked brush after all the major tones have been laid in with standard round brush otherwise you have to go over and over an area with the raked brush to get complete coverage.

Wow awesome strokes.
Was this in Painter?

No, actually it's Photoshop with some custom brushes. I could have got the same look with Painter but I'm just some much more efficient in PS.
