It is just a matter of practise. If you follow the link in the comments above you can see Details.
Just Switch between fullview and original size while you do it and it will work.

really? I've tried to make icons on there but it never looks good in the end... any tips?

Not really. How did you try?
I start small. Because rescaling always leads to blurry pics.
Start with a good reference. Keep it simple.
Make the basic shape/form and than add in colors.
And than try and error. That's the good thing with digitals.

I make the canvas 50X50 and then draw a pic on it... but it looks very pixely and gross

Here is it in full view. As you can see it is very pixalated. But that is what we want. In original view it will all look smooth.

If you look at it full screen you will of course see the pixels. You musst look at it in original size.
Let me see if I can make something...
