I think what adds to the (for lack of a better word) epicness of this map is the fact that the perspective is so high up that you cannot see the major cities as nothing more than little ant like structures-which adds to the sheer scope of the land of Equestria here. I have always loved landscape drawings, especially if they are detailed, and this one is no exception. The lighting is excellent, especially in the mountains and the badlands. The clouds look realistic due to position and shading, and the details of the forests, oceans and even glaciers makes this look like its from a panoramic flyby photo. All those little details make for an excellent, if not epic, portrait.
Incidentally, I have to praise you for the depiction of the badlands. I am currently working on a story based there, and your depiction is by far the best one I have seen. Ill definitely use it as reference, if you don't mind. Thank you so much for creating this!

...Where's Hoofington?

Unfortunately, we’ve never been given an actual location for Hoofington, not on the official map anyways. During her show in Boast Busters, Trixie claims that she “sent [the Ursa Major] back to its cave deep within the Everfree Forest!” (taken from transcript on mlp.wikia.com), making it fairly likely that Hoofington is located on the edge of the forest, not all that far from Ponyville (relatively speaking). If she were just making the town up for her story or it were a fair distance away from the Everfree Forest, anypony with a decent knowledge of geography could’ve called her out right then and there.
My personal headcanon, for what little it is worth, puts it near that fork in the river north of Dodge Junction and south of Rambling Rock Ridge (complete with an old style waterwheel in background shots for a quaint feeling). Unfortunately I haven’t actually watched the entire series, so my headcanon may have been jossed at some point.
