Words Below:

Murder mystery games had been played at dinner parties and conventions for decades.  Everyone would play a character and one of them would be chosen as the murderer.  The others would attempt to solve the mystery while staying in character.  Sometimes they would solve it and sometimes they would not.

In the twenty-second century Virtual Role Playing Games, or VRPGs, were very popular.  One of those games was called Murder Mystery.  It was made by Virtual Worlds Unlimited and based on the murder mystery games of old.  The game included an optional hypnosis feature which would allow the players to actually experience things from the point of view of the characters.

Levi decided to play the game and use the hypnosis feature.  He would be given a character and then play the game with people from all over the world.  All the male characters were taken so he was given a female character.  From the description he read, she was a very eccentric character so he named her Luna.

Once the virtual bodies of all the players were in place, the hypnosis began.  Levi felt the sensation of his own body fading away.  He was left drifting in a deep void.  Then he gained the sensations of the body they had created for him.  Luna only existed in virtual reality, yet the sensations of her body seemed just as real as the sensations of his own body ever were.

Next came his identity.  He no longer thought of himself as Levi.  The identity of Luna was the only identity "she" recognized.  It was the person "she" had become.

Memories soon followed.  All memories of being Levi faded from his mind and were replaced by memories of being Luna.  Luna's long and complex backstory seemed just as real as the memories of any human being.

Finally came the personality.  With all of "her" memories in place "she" began to act like Luna.  It was as if Luna was the person "she" had been "her" entire life.  As it turned out, Luna was the murder and "she" had to do everything within "her" power to keep the others from finding out.

Levi as Luna successfully prevented the others from figuring out she was the murder and won the game.  Once the game was over, the bodily sensations, identity, memories, and personality of Levi returned to him.  Acting like a deceptive and violent female eccentric happened in a virtual world which meant no one was actually harmed.

The effects of the hypnosis feature could easily be dismissed.  At least that was the official statement from the PR department of Virtual Worlds Unlimited.  Whether or not that was actually true, especially after long term use, was another matter entirely.
