Which is always something I never got. I can understand Red Sonya wearing one, since she's a barbarian from the same universe as Conan. There's a degree of suspension of disbelief there. But in other fantasy works, it just looks dumb.

The reason why I let her off the hook is that she was created during the 30s. Back than, a strong and independent heroine with fiery red hair was unheard of. But you also had to sell the idea to people more likely to buy comics, and Conan is often depicted as being bare-chested anyway. Which is just as silly as going out wearing metal undergarments.

Well, yeah. In the books (and to an extent, every other bit of media) Conan wasn't just a big hairy barbarian obsessed with revenge. He was a diplomatic king who ran an empire (quite well until he got bored of that), a pirate lord skilled in naval tactics, he could speak several languages, he could write in several languages, dealt with philosophical issues, spared his foes on occasion, fought his foes with a mixture of cunningness and brute force, and even ended up being a pimp in 1970s' Earth (via the Marvel comics run). Even in the 1980 and 1984 movies, Conan was a skilled thief who stuck to the shadows, and was capable of philosophising. Ahnoldisms notwithstanding. Conan is only a Barbarian in the classical sense; he doesn't hail from an imperial city or speak in a so-called enlightened manner. Whereas the Hulk was more like a modern depiction of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with more emphasis on smashing things than dealing with introspection. In broad strokes, the last thing you would call Conan of Hyboria is an idiot.

Agreed. Though oddly enough, the only character who would kind of be comparable to Hulk in any of the Conan stories would be the Destroyer version of Zula. Who was even more of a barbarian than Conan, and played by the extremely tall Grace Jones.
