Description

I have always loved water gardens, the standing pools, rock formations, and passive vegetation that serves to accent the artistic qualities of setting of the pool as a whole. ^^

Well this is a blast from the past, I still can not believe that I had not showcased this piece earlier. This piece was created by the amazing who has done a great job bringing Amenii to life.Β

Thank you, and really? I can see the pool aspect - the plants I am guessing would work as a form of shading. There is something to be said about the old ways. ^^

Here where I live we have a forested area. Coming to my apartment on a really hot day you can feel the coolness the closer you get to the forest area. Trees do cool the atmosphere. Think of it like the pool. Evaporative cooling.
Its why forests are so important. As forests disappear our atmosphere will heat up.

I did not know that, fascinating though. And if it comes to that, I will make my last stand in Alaska. Β  I lived almost all of my life in Alaska so I was surrounded by trees, summers were a lot cooler than people expected.Β

Now that I have moved to a much more open environment I find summer heat to be near unbearable.

Alaska would be a good place to head to.
Climate is good. Fishing plentiful.
Zombies move much slower in cooler weather.😁

Fishing in the Midnight Sun.

I remember fishing around Paxson Lake which was south of Fort Greeley on Highway 4 one summer.
There we were catching (and releasing unless we were hungry) Arctic Grayling.
One guy asked what time it was.
The answer came back as 3 o’clock.
PM or AM?
A good question as it was cloudy so no visual on the sun. Later we did determine it was AM after using our iolite lens to see the sun position through the haze.
An old Viking trick.

Code-Shark In reply to Veteran1972 [2019-02-26 15:00:40 +0000 UTC]

'Am or Pm...does it matter?'

Lol I can see this happening all to easily, god I miss being up there. There were so many fishing holes that one could seek out, and nothing but time to do whatever you wanted.

I did not know about that trick, I will have to try it, given I ever see a cloudy day down here.

Iolite in a thin slice has polarized filters capabilities. Allows you to see the sun thru the haze.
Using that and the Sunstone Vikings could navigate the open seas with surprisingly good accuracy to finding true north.

In our Arctic Survival training we learned other ways to navigate other than using a compass.
Regular magnetic compasses didn’t read right unless you calculated in the declination.
Dang things nearly pointed due east.
Magnetic north is up in north Canada towards Greenland.........and it moves.

Lol great fun, especially when you are travailing in a group and the debate over whether to trust the compass or not comes up. XD I recall one guy, this was up hiking in Denali, nice trails but even funner once you cross over the stream/river (To big to be a steam, but to shallow to be a real river. Nice white water in parts though, and with a good head of speed.)

Anyways, the reason for this crossing was we spotted something reflective up the slopes on the other side and figured we would investigate. So, we slogged over and after about an hour of climbing we locate its source, that being another hiker with the most fancy compass tool I have seen. Silver and gold inlay, this thing must have weighted at least a pound, maybe pound and a half. And this guy has it around his neck.

As it turned out he had no idea how to use it. It was a gift from his wife, so he would not get lost. We had a laugh about that after we were out of earshot, as the guy was way off the beaten path.

Funny thing is I never had one of these when I was up in Alaska, though now that you mention it I wish I had at times. On more than one occasion I have called into doubt my compass readings, but mostly put that up to User Error.

Instead, I fall back on the good old Dead Reckoning sense of direction finding. My companions love it when I do this. ^^

I was a map navigator.
No compass need as I used the map to find land markers then orientation of it to the next marker.

I just love those folks with all that high tech gear with no clue how to use it.

Those planes lost in the triangle were victims of not trusting instincts.
