Description An original MLP:FiM character of mine talking. Created mostly for animation practice. Unfortunately, editing the original puppet took about 1/3 of the production time.

Hopefully more where this came from. Will probably use Flamingo1986's new Rainbow Dash rig as the template though, since turning a unicorn into a pegasus only eats up more time I could be using to animate.

- - -

All credit for My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic goes to Hasbro and Lauren Faust. (They're pretty awesome.)

Based (heavily) on Flamingo1986's Twilight Sparkle puppet rig, which may be found here: [link] (He's pretty awesome too.)

And, yeah, that's me as the voice actor. >_>;

- - -

Looking back, I realize I should have animated the body as well, but it was a rush 2 day project to go from the static Twilight puppet to an animated OC pony, so I'm satisfied.

(It was a mother's day gift. As you can probably guess, I swapped out the audio track for the dA upload.)

This is really amazing, and weirdly cute! What program do you use? After effects or Flash? (Or other, )

Thanks! ^^
I use Adobe Flash, but I know some people do MLP animations in AE. I personally think the AE animations look a little too wobbly, but that's just my opinion. The original show is done using Flash, that I know.

You're welcome! ^^
I thought so, I have been trying to use puppets on flash recently, but I can't lip sync well and the movement is still quite jittery... :S
But this is really smooth and runs brilliantly!
And, I actually agree. A lot of AE animations seem a little limited and not smooth enough.
I didn't know the show was done on flash, though!

Yep! ...all the character animation anyway.
And don't worry, you'll get the hang of it! I learned so much in the process of making my puppet test for Double Rainboom that I started to look back at this lip sync animation and kinda shake my head in shame... and then I learned so much more doing some official shots for DR and looked back at my puppet test and started shaking my head at it!
It's really all about learning how you personally animate. I took a look at some of your animation work, and it definitely looks like you know what you're doing. A little more refinement and you'll be cranking out show quality stuff!
(Btw, your avatar is really cute!)

Wow. That's cool!
I've been looking at the previews for Double Rainboom and the animation looks really good! I can't wait to see the finished thing! When your not busy with Double Rainboom or anything that may take up your spare time, you should try re-do this, so you can see how you've improved! >v<
Well, thank you for taking a look, firstly! And, I'm really happy you think so, it means a lot! <

(Thank you! ^^ Oh- I really like your character! I forgot to mention before :3 )

Thanks!
I use Adobe Flash, and I know that's what Hasbro/DHX use for the character animation in the show. I would suggest taking a look at this tutorial for a really good look into how to do Flash puppet animation: [link]

Thanks!, i have seen all of those tutorials(it was hiper helpful), but i wanted to know specifically how do you know what mouth to use with each pronunciation, i have heard of some plugins for flash that can help to lip-synch, but none of the ones i have tried work for CS6

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

codefox421 In reply to PurpleBolt [2013-01-24 05:30:45 +0000 UTC]

I do it all manually. I talk through the audio either in front of a mirror or while imagining what my mouth looks like while I say the words. Then I dive into the mouth symbol and find the shape I'm looking for. Generally, more drastic mouth shapes should have easing into and out of them, so I use a short sequence of similar, less pronounced shapes to achieve that. Animated on 1s and 2s to match the audio, it turns out pretty good (IMO). Every once in a while, I'll have to create a mouth shape that doesn't exist, but usually it's only a single in-between shape, so I just modify a preexisting mouth shape for that.
I haven't tried any lip-sync plugins... I probably should someday, but for now I'll stick to what I know.

Thanks! Haha yeah my mic is pretty terrible
I need to redo this eventually. Not only because I've changed the character slightly and have access to better audio equipment, but I've also learned so much more about animating since I made this.

ColonelYeo [2012-08-09 22:44:38 +0000 UTC]

That was pretty good!

The lip syncing looks pretty spot on. Though you may want to work a little bit on the audio quality. (Irrelevant considering this was only meant to test the animation, but just throwing that out there.)
