Description
The Enlightened Desktop aims to be a desktop driven mostly by the Enlightenment Desktop Shell and applications based on the Enlightenment Foundation Librararies (in this case Etk - The Enlightenment ToolKit). In this screenshot, we see the following applications:1- Etk Audio Player:
This application was started as a sample teaching application for one of the chapters in my book, Etk Explained. The chapter shows the reader how to build an application based on Etk, Enhance (the Glade to Etk parser) and Emotion (multimedia library using Evas). So far, the player can load M3U files, play songs, search the list, and use ID3 tags. More features are in the works.
2- Exhibit:
Exhibit is an image viewer that uses Etk as its toolkit. Exhibit supports image previews for image types supported by Evas and allows for directory changing using a point and click interface or a text input box with tab autocompletion support. Common operations include rotation / flipping, sharpen / blur, saving, resizing, zooming in and out, drag and drop, image sorting, and a tabbed-ui with favorites support.
2- Extrackt:
Extrackt is essentially an audio CD ripper and encoder. It allows you to choose your ripper and encoder based on templates which give Extrackt the ability to use multiple built in and user defined ones. Extrackt is logically split into a frontend (gui) and a backend (ripping / encoding / cddb etc.) and allows for frontends to be written using any toolkit like Etk, Ewl, Gtk, or even pure Evas / Edje (not to mention ncurses or simlpe shell ones).
3- Eim - The Enlightenment Instant Messenger:
Eim aims to be a fully fledged generic instant messenger application. Supported protocols right now are IRC and work is being on on the MSN protocol. Eim supports multiple accounts, multiple chats, and uses the Etk library.
4- Entropy:
Entropy is a file manager on steriods. It uses EVFS (the Enlightenment Virtual FileSystem) and supports filesystems over ssh, ftp, http (soon), thumbnails (in a generic fashion), locations, mime-type associations, and several other things. Entropy and EVFS are very powerful and fast while remaining extremely lean on both memory and cpu usage.
5- Other:
The desktop is running several modules / gadgets, some of which are a weather module, pager, application launcher, temperature, CPU speed control, battery indicator, and clock.

I've always had a soft spot for the enlightenment project since back in the days of running RH 6, so am rather keen on trying out the e17 on my Mint 10 laptop, as I need something that will be light but beautiful partly to show off of course, but also because I believe you actually work better with a better environment and that includes the desktop.
However I have still managed to run into various issues, perhaps more to do with trying to control every aspect of the customization. But sometimes I get strange errors to the .xsession file and I really don't know what to do about those. I get them with Gnome, also. I'd like to know from someone who actually develops what the best solution is, because I don't know what to make of the technical details, but I know when something is broken... do I send someone my entire .xsession file or what?
thanks for any advice. Really appreciate it.

E17 and xfce is the only way. E is not overkill, KDE is.

Then, of course, there's the grandfather of E17, FVWM

Looking nice so far. Thanks for the work for making the desktop a better place - I guess it's about time I went and recompiled the latest stuff from the E CVS repository.
This screenshot, and especially the applications in it, can be thought of as a milestone in showing people that unlike some seem to think, the Enlightenment Project is not dead, but alive and kicking!
Well, that's about it for now. I'll leave the mindless ramblings for IRC. C Ya!

Man, i'm going to be taking a small break from common lisp here real soon, perhaps to give etk a whirl. G-d, to be honest I might even give up on writting common lisp bindings for EFL, and just go with ETK. At anyrate I'll certainly have a look at it soon if time permits.
Nice screeny btw,

ETK overkill, E gets much more rich with ETK, a lot of apps will pop up in the future and already now i think
Go on with ETK, push it baby! ^^
