In the manga version of Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask the Deku Princess asks Link to put the Deku Mask on one more time before he leaves. He does so and she tells him goodbye while running away in tears. The Deku Butler explains that with the mask on he looks like his deceased son who the Deku Princess had fallen in love with.

In the games credits we see the Deku Butler crying at the dead looking tree that can be found around the start of the game before you enter Termina. So its implied that the Skull Kid killed the Deku Butlers son and since all transformation masks in the game belonged to deceased characters and contain their feelings and wishes. Its safe to assume that the Skull Kid killed the Deku Butler's son and then forced his spirit or soul into Link forcing the transformation until the Happy Mask Salesman helps Link by teaching him the Song of Healing.

So with that I'd like to think Link gave the Deku Princess the Deku Mask to keep to remember the Deku Butler's son.
