Description I'm always late to the party. One of my favourite characters from Mass Effect. I guess I'll get better over time.

Property of Bioware/EA, only painted for the love of it.

Really?

I had this sitting around in a save folder for ages before I finally gave up on it.

Yes, really! It just looks a bit unfinished.

Too sloppy? I tried tightening it up but it wasn't happening. I think I need to play about with brush settings or something.

No, not sloppy. I like this loose painterly style. I just thought a few more details and a few brighter highlights would make it even better.
I don't want to criticize, it's only my humble and honest opinion.

No its great that you said something! I can take criticism, I want it in fact so I know what I am doing wrong or what I could do better. I might try that out, adding more highlights etc and see if that makes a difference.
So thank you!

WHOA, I love the beautifully scalloped texture on the head especially, mimicking the curves of the dorsal shell/armor! Reminds me almost of a nautilus mantle. Also really like that bulging seam or vein in the "chin"--it's one of those oddly dimensional elements that really makes the whole thing pop. Plus the beady yellow eye! Yeah, once again, not quite like anything I've ever seen from you but cool for that reason in addition to all the usual ones!

I'm trying something new. I worry I use my usual way of doing things as a cover. SO I'm trying to be loose and somewhat "realistic" like all the concept art that I like so much.

Oh, interesting...Hm, I'm not sure I understand what you mean about using your typical methods as a "cover," though....Or maybe I do, I've been feeling like my usual tonal shading surface treatment is a kind of jaded way of jazzing up subpar drawings, so if that's the kind of thing you're feeling then yeah I know what you mean. : / A matter of getting back to the substance over the cosmetic stylization or the refined finish, I guess is what I'm saying.

That's the one. It's like I can't do it in a realistic manner so I'll just make it a cartoon, with bright distracting colours.

I now have two digital paintings on the go that are going to really push me. I had to start them they have been rattling about my head for months or years. Perhaps the best part of all I'll do a good job. I also have waiting in the wings several critters which I'll do periodically and a couple of dinosaurs. But the hard ones I want done now, I am so impatient at the moment. I think that is part of my problem, being too impatient. To impatient to practice, to impatient to paint!
