Wonderful shot, what a capture! I think your estimation of the dolphin's age is quite spot on as fetal folds (those white folds on the side) disappear at around 6 weeks of age in common botlenose dolphins. It does depend on how quickly the baby gets fat though, and also the population; some dolphins in Moray firth, Scotland, still show their folds at a year of age!

Wow, what a great photographic capture of the mom-calf pair! I have submitted this to my group's gallery, and it will be awaiting your approval. I would very much like to invite you to join my group, #CetaceansFromTheSea , that is devoted to wild cetaceans - dolphins, whales, and porpoises - that live in the oceans.
Let me ask, was this photo taken close to John's Pass and the Madeira Beach? The reason I ask is because Dr. Ann Weaver studies about 200+ dolphins in the area since 2005-2006. I have been following her charges for a long while, and I have come to know each one of them better.

Thank you for the invitation. Yes it was taken in Madeira Beach and I am also familiar with Ann Weaver, as I live in that area. The boat this was taken on actually leaves out of John's Pass. I look forward to joining your group.

Oh, wow, what small world that you know Ann Weaver and that you also live in the same area! Are you familiar with the dolphins that Ann studies? I wonder which mom-calf pair these dolphins shown in this photo are. Do you know? When did you take this photo? Since you posted the photo in June of 2010, I wonder if the little one was one of the calves born in summer of 2009. I am quite curious, since I have been following Ann's DW studies very closely. I am so glad that you will plan to join my group!

This picture was taken off of Madeira Beach just north of John's Pass. I don't know anything about this pair other than that. Although they were together with three other dolphins to make a total group of five that day.
