Knees sing below the groaning, crackling arch of his back
As he crawls into the black, eternal gaping maw
Hose in one hand, flashlight in the other
He descends into the hot beast’s belly broken already.
Click! His light cuts upward through the steamy dark like a sword.
Above him shine the reflections of a thousand cooling drips of iron
Clinging to the grating like stars; cold like tears
And he reaches up to pluck them, one by one, from the slatted heavens.
The one before him quit after only one day on the job
He’d wet himself in the belly of the beast because his fire-hose became a snake
And tried persistently to decapitate him
The novice was rescued but the iron tears lingered above with infinite patience.
Clink! He drops another tear into his pouch
Grateful for the time passed since the last batch of industrial plates were molded
Giving his tears a chance to cool
And thanking God for small favors –he won’t have to use his hose tonight.
Heat and steam envelop him in a wave as the beast issues forth a tremendous belch
And for a moment the rising cadence of his protesting joints and limbs is silenced
The hackles on the back of his neck relax finally with the slowly dissipating odiferous heat
Again, silence in the great belly, and the tear collector continues his harvest.
The years slip away and the world moves on
Leaving in its wake the steam scorched son of nobody
Forever lost amid the lights and smells of the world above
He dies one cold spring morning seeking the open jaws of his old friend, keeper of the tears.
