also on tumblr!this took 5ever because it was my first attempt at full shading. i've been using the cel-shading crutch for far too long.
can we just talk about how rad it is that we finally have a fully-canon, not subtexted-as-hell gay couple on a kids' show? i mean it is an all-female race so it's kind of a given in context, but good on you, steven universe writers.
also sorry for polluting the gemstone tags. i blame it on the fact that the tagging system on this site is bollocks.

Exactly what I was thinking. In fact, that's what got me to check out the show in the first place, their willingness to go that far. (That and Stevonnie. You mean they had a male and female character fuse? Human ones? That struck me as something that a lot of kids' show writers would be afraid to do. I remember Silphymon from Digimon, but there we're talking about a cat and a bird made of data. A "Steven" and a "Connie" becoming one person who can't be considered strictly male or female... there are many who would not be pleased!)
IN addition to those things being interesting, you knew this was going to be a different kind of show, more to it than meets the eye. And they sure deliver on that!

yes. i feel like steven universe has been leading the pack as far as lgbt representation goes in children's media. i also like that they're one of the few shoes with a single-sex race that actually takes into consideration the fact that having a single-sex race ostensibly means that all of the members would be what humans consider gay.
