Description

Man! This took a lot longer than I though, but not for the normal reasons!

You may remember this picture as the old sketch seen here: [link]

Now, to be quite honest, I completely forgot all about this pic, as well as many others, and that I planned to finish this because I like it so much. Well, the only reason I decided to come back to it, was because I need a guinea pig.

See, lately I thought my art has been getting stale and I needed a change. So a few friends helped out by teaching me how to use "Easy," Paint Tool SAI, and that is particularly why it took so long to ink! It's indeed a pretty simple program to use, but it has the problem of needing to be SUPER precise in order to get proper curves and angles, especially with a trackball mouse! I didn't even bother messing with the weights and pressures function, this was merely a test to see if I could produce a properly inked piece in SAI at all, and I think I did rather well. There are a few minor details that I absolutely NEEDED PS to do, or it would bug me to no end, but mostly this picture was completely inked in SAI, and I'm actually kinda proud of it.

I know how to use Paint Tool SAI!

As always, tell me what you think! ^^

Heya Luis. XD I heard about ya from Shiro! And thanks for the comment, and the points!

If I had to give you any tips, firstly try to envision the pose clearly in your mind. Practice preforming the pose yourself to see how the character's hands, feet and other parts of the body would be held in that pose, see if it's even a comfortable position to be in! A pose can look cool all day long, but if it's uncomfortable, it doesn't seem realistic.

Which brings me to my next tip, draw from life! Try to find photographs of people who are in similar poses in something like Google Image Search, and try to mimic them in drawing, then build upon them into your creation. If you can't find the poses your looking for that way, you can ask someone to take a photo of yourself in the pose you want and there's your reference.

If all else fails, you can try doing poses that are already drawn in some art pieces as practice, until you get better at it, but you will have to credit the original artist if you do that, or you can get accused of tracing. And that's no good! Even a somewhat experienced artist as myself uses this method.

Lastly, once you've decided on the pose and can clearly envision it, do a REALLY rough sketch of the character's figure. Separate the body into portions, drawing them as simple geometric figures like circles and rectangles, and then link them up for the body outline until it LOOKS right. When doing this, try not to worry about how clean the lineart is, make as many strokes as necessary until the desired shape is fleshed out and don't worry too much about erasing the excess lines until after you have a super rough outline. When that's done you can darken the outline so the lineart is more solid at this point, and then you can erase the excess. After that, it just becomes a task of putting all the features and details of a character's design on this new figure you've made.

And before I continue on with this and it becomes a whole semester's curriculum on art, I'll end it there. If you need anymore help, don't be afraid to ask! ^^
