it's amazing how this show is capable of getting with stuff like this unlike other shows (originally)directed to an older demographic...

As far as I know, it is the place where Olympian gods keep dangerous creatures&humans that challenged their power. I think the concept is quite similar to the hell what we think of.

Considering it is guarded by Cereburus, perhaps it is more of a underworld though.

Spacecommie In reply to Kenas [2012-03-11 18:30:42 +0000 UTC]

it is one part of the underworld where all the dead end up Tartaris is basicly hell but there are three parts of it one of them is for heroes and another which from what I can tell is for everyone else and kinda sucks, however in greek mythology Hades is one of the few decent gods of the Greecian panthion, unfortunetely because of my obsession with history and mythology I sometimes get butthurt and I apologize for that and as I said before great art as usual.
Disney fails history forever by the way but ultimately you are the artist here I'm just a grump about history sorry if I was a bother.

I just love how they keep adding more and more mythological creatures to the show. We got Dragons and Gryphons (and many others) in Season 1, and now we have a Minotaur, Cerberus, and even an Ahuizotl (Aztec) in Season 2.

And now about your comic. The facial expressions on the last panel are just perfect, specially AB and Scoot's. And actually when I saw the Cerberus in the episode my first thought was Hades too. Great job as always!

Interesting fact about Tartarus, or Tartaros as it is sometimes called

In ancient Orphic sources and in the mystery schools, Tartarus is also the unbounded first-existing entity from which the Light and the cosmos are born.

All that was really confirmed is that Tartarus is a prison guarded by Cerberus in the MLP:FIM universe. It might not even be afterlife-related, though it would be interesting if it was. My new headcanon is that all the nastiest G1 villains are locked in there.

As for why Discord's statue wasn't locked away there, well, you saw how he was able to escape. Chances are, it would probably be easier for him to escape in the negative environment of a prison. And it makes sense that Celestia and Luna would keep his statue somewhere they could always see it.

The Greek myths which specify that Tartarus is a deep crack within the Earth that Zeus cast the Titans and a lot of other dufuses into, then sealed? Gaea is apparently pretty ticked off about it.

also Originally, Tartarus was used only to confine dangers to the gods of Olympus. In later mythologies, Tartarus became the place where the punishment fits the crime.

That's really interesting. I've always been fascinated by mythology, and Greek mythology specifically.

I just thought it was weird to hear about it in an MLP episode. It seemed kind of random.

EverlastingJoy In reply to ??? [2012-03-11 05:06:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they had the Cerberus (my favorite out of all Greek monsters) and a reference to Tartarus, which just so happens to be the lowest point in Hades. I love Greek mythology and I love this show for making allusions to the mythos.

I love this show.
