Description
"Face Off",the makeup competition show on the SyFy Channel,is one of my favorite shows--they just completed their second season--for those of you unfamiliar with it,a dozen or so potential makeup artists are given a weekly challenge, create an alien,a zombie,a makeup based on an animal and so forth. My favorite challenge of the season was to take a person of an ordinary trade or profession, and create a look as to how they might appear if they were a character in a Tim Burton movie. The chosen professions were Plumber,Baker,Bellhop,Cellist,Ice Cream Vendor and Toymaker. While watching the episode a second time,I noticed the two unchosen professions,Mailman and Farmer.
I began to sketch out a possible look for a Burtonesque Farmer, beginning with the traditional 20th century farmer, albeit slightly asymetrical in appearance, then gave him pallid skin and big, expressive eyes.I then thought that would be crops actually growing out of him,his left arm completely a growing plant, the tendrils actually fusing him to his clothes and tool;I debated whether to have him hold a pitchfork or a hoe---I decided the pitchfork would make him look too menancing. In tribute to Burton,I made the patches on his overalls in black-and-white patterns. The blue ribbon was a last-minute inspiration.
