Description
Hummingbird Hawk Moth (Macroglossum stellatarum).Unusual visitor to the UK, normally found in the Mediterranean and Asia, amazing little things, very fast and quite difficult to shoot, they can been seen during the day.
I think this ones tail looks like the Devil, you can see eyes and horns on it.
The flowers in the shot are Verbena, gives a sense of the size of the Moth, approx Wingspan 40-50 mm.

Love how they're only a couple inches smaller than the Hummingbird itself

I've been trying to get a good picture of a hummingbird for a few weeks now but I can never quite get a good one. How did you do this? [link]
Other then my slight jealousy I think this is an amazing picture. Nice job!

Thank you very much
I used a 100mm macro which is a fairly fast lens and great for this type of shot, I find manual focussing easier than auto when tracking the subject, it was very obliging taking its time from flower to flower which gave me plenty of time to focus and shoot.

Funny, the other two images i took a few weeks ago, it has been the only week i have seen any this year.
This image was taken last year and i saw them just about everyday for months.

I saw them two or three years ago, a couple of times, on the zinnia flowers, but none this year. I keep checking because I'd like to have another try. First time I tried capturing them was with a little compact cam which had a horrible shutter lag and I couldn't get exposure times short enough.

Great capture..
I remember seeing my first hummingbird hawkmoth years ago in my teens...
Its amazing how many people claim they have seen a hummingbird in this country only to be told that it is infact a moth
