Batman -
Trials of the Criminally Insane
AT THE HALF-WAY MOON HOTEL...
Two-Face grinned an uneven half smile as he flips he coin, calling which side it lands on
as he waits for the caped crusader to arrive. He looks around at the once proud and swanky
hotel, seeing some fond memories of him and his old friend Bruce Wayne walking into the
place like they owned it. But the memory soon faded as his head turned, hearing a noise.
He then looked at his crew, The Two-Ton Gang, four of the biggest, strongest and musclebound
men in the business, seeing them guarding an old and big blackjack wheel, having the other
'Knight' tied tightly on it. “Well well, thought you could sneak in and join our little 'soiree'
here, eh Knight?... The brains behind this gauntlet thought that you'd be a flight risk if you
were involved and go squealing to the Bat... guess he was right..”, Two-Face said, looking at
his coin as he flipped it high in the air. “I said for you to be skinned, but I lost the coin toss..”
As the coin came down, he covered it as its lands on his hand, walking towards the knight to
show him what the coin said. “If its Good Heads, you live to breathe another few minutes..
If its Bad Heads, then Bruno here gets to earn his two percent faster..”, he said, lifting his hand
up slowly to show him what the coin said. “But boss..”, Bruno said, interrupting Two-Face.
“Why don't we just waste the freak? Why do we need a coin to....” Two-Face then slaps his
head with his Tommy gun, knocking him to the ground as he yells at him: “FOOL!! We always
follow what the coin says!! I can't make up my mind with out it!” After his outburst, Harvey
went back over to the “Knight”, ready to show them what the coin said as they hear tires screeching
to a halt, smelling asphalt burning in the air as it stopped and the engine turned off. “Ahh...
Batman... Quick, get into position.”, he said, gesturing to the goons to hide behind the old card
game tables as he drapes a sheet over the 'Knight' and ran towards the main office in the now
darkened room, with light only shining on the giant wheel.
The front doors flew wide open as Batman stood in the doorway, surveying the area as he slowly
walks towards the giant wheel, cautious as he did. As he approached the wheel and examined
the shape of the sheet, a voice came over the P.A. system: “Welcome Batman.. As you can see,
I fixed the place up for ya a little.. Even left ya a present for your fine work in 'prosecuting' the
'raff' that goes into Arkham.” Batman slowly lifted his hands to the big wheel, knowing that could
be anything from the Knight to a person sized bomb. He put his hands on the sheet and pulled
it off quickly, stunned as he saw who the Knight was. Then, the lights shot on around them,
blinding his vision. As they shined away, it reveald the Two-Ton Gang surrounding him with
Two-Face slowly walking up to him with his Tommy gun in hand. “So glad you could finally
join us for the party Bats.. Though it'll be your last one..”, Two-Face said as he gestured to the
guys to grab Batman and hold him still. “What do you think of our... Knight here?? Not much
what you were expecting eh??” “No I wasn't Harvey... But what possessed you to capture
Catwoman in the first place?”, Batman asked, struggling with the thugs to free himself. “Miss
Kitty here was putting her nine lives where they shouldn'ta been, snooping on our plans.. So
when I found her looking in on my dime, I trussed her up and let her sit out to dry”, Two-Face
said as he reloaded his gun, seeing the guys move the Bat over towards Catwoman. “Why
Batman, I can't believe you'd come all this way and risk life and limb to save little old me??
Hmm... Then our love must mean something to you..”, she said as she rubbed her face tightly
as she could against his. “This isn't the time for that Selena. We need to think of a way to get
out of this trap..”, Batman said under his breath as they stared down the shaft of Two-Face's
Tommy gun. “Selena, can you kick the capsule on my belt, the one closest to you?”, he
whispered to her as she looked down and saw a black pellet towards her left foot. She nods
as they heard the click of the barrel case locking in place, signaling that they needed to move
quickly. Two-Face half grinned as his finger slipped into the trigger and gave it a gently
squeeze. Batman then yelled: “NOW!!!” Catwoman nodded and kicked the capsule hard
with the front of her shoe, causing it to explode in a huge cloud of smoke, engulfing the
room and blinding the men and Two-Face for a time. As the smoke clears, they all see that
Batman and Catwoman were gone. “WHAT???? Where'd they go??” The goons look around,
having a dumbfounded expansion on their faces as they see nothing. They backed up slowly
as they see Two-Face ready to explode in anger as he words filled the hotel: “DON'T JUST
STAND THERE LIKE IMBECILES . FIND THEM!!!!!!!” The goons scramble about,
bumping into each other as they looked throughout the main hall, the only place that
wasn't condemned here.
Meanwhile, Batman and Catwoman were on the catwalk above them, trying to be as
quite as possible as they neared a broken air duct to escape from. Batman turned back
towards Catwoman, whispering to her: “Go.. I have to stop Two-Face from causing
anymore mayhem.” But before she could protest to him, he leapt into the rafters, out
of sight from her and moved towards the goons. He looked down from the rafters,
being hidden in the shadows from Two-Face's horde as he spots one of them and draws
a Bat-a-Rang out of his utility belt, lining his shot up to the first goon and threw it. In
a blink of an eye, the goon was out cold, sleeping soundly on the floor as his partner
turned around to see what was up. “Hey... HEY!!!”, he said loudly, shaking his partner
back and forth to wake him up. He then heard a whooshing noise moving swiftly
through the air, though he couldn't see it. As soon as he turned his head again, another
Bat-a-Rang hit its mark and knock the man out as Batman leaped down to tie them up
for the police to take in. At the same time, Two-Face hears that his men were being
taken down like chumps as he waves his gun around, trying to see the Bat as he walks
away from under the catwalk.
Catwoman, who hadn't listened to Batman, looks on in excitement as she tries to get a
better view of the situation. Unfortunately for her, she did not see a fallen piece of gas pipe
on the walk, tripping on it as she silently gasped to herself. Two-Face cocks his head slightly,
growling softly as he then turns all the way around and shoots up at where he heard the
noise, hoping it was Batman. The bullets made Swiss cheese of the catwalk, hearing it
creak and howl as it falls down to the floor with Catwoman on it. Batman rushed out
from the shadows to see what had happened and saw Two-Face holding Catwoman in
his clutches and pointing his gun straight at her face on an angle. “So... Here's how its
going down Bat's! You're gonna trade places with Ms. Kitty here, and I get to waste you
once and for all...”, Two-Face said sternly to him, not blinking once as he waited for his
answer. “Alright Harvey... Alright..”, he said as he slowly approached them both, showing
him his hands as to not make him suspicious of anything. As Batman looked at Catwoman,
he winked to her slyly as he gave her an instruction to follow. Once he was in grabbing
distance of Two-Face, Catwoman hissed and stomped down hard on his foot with her
heel, making him scream in agony as Batman rushes him and kicks the gun out of his
hand. He and Catwoman then drew back their fists and thrusts them forward, each
taking a face to hit and knocked him out cold.
After a half an hour later, Gordon arrived with his forces to arrest Two-Face and his cronies.
As they hauled him away, another note was found, but in his pocket. Gordon gave it to
Batman and let him read it aloud: “In this place of a mutual friend, it started his birth of
pain from an untimely end. Where fires burn and cauldrons bubble, the witches laugh
and stir men's troubles. To lead the army of the insane, for the birds caw for the suzerain!!!”
Gordon was baffled as he paced around the room trying to decipher the riddle. “What does
it mean Batman?”, he asked him, seeing him walking with Catwoman as he stops and to
answer him: “It means...... The Scarecrow..” Thunder and lightning then struck overhead,
adding to the gloom of the situation as they feared the worst for if he is loose, all of Gotham
was in mortal danger. “The Scarecrow... Quick, put out an A.P.B. for him and check
everywhere he might be hiding. We just might find him if we hurry.”, Gordon said to his
officer, looking very disoriented at the situation. “There's only one place that he would be
hiding Commissioner.. And that's the Ace Chemicals Plant..”, Batman said as he and
Catwoman hopped into the Batmobile and drove off in a ferocious roar from the engine..
INSIDE THE ACE CHEMICAL PLANT......
An ominous figure stood up on the catwalks in the shadows, lurking over the vats of
strange and bubbling green goo that filled the whole plant with a foul odor and even
more gruesome appearance as he shouted down to his workers: “HURRY UP YOU
FOOLS!!!!” He then started pacing around as he said to himself: “No doubt that double
faced dimwit failed in his task of keeping Batman at bay, as I am ever nearer the
completion of my master plan! But now the time tables have been sped up exponentially..
And there cannot be any mistakes in the procedure..” He then turned around and
walked into an old office and slammed the door shut, preparing for the fight he and
the Dark Knight would have..
