Ion cannon is quite a general term in sci-fi, in star wars is a shield/electronics killer that leaves the hull relatively in tact, while others use them is a powerful anti material weapon.
Back to the picture the outer atmosphere looks good and brightness near the impact area is good, but I think it would look better it the brightness faded out to a greater degree.
